EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens basketball team overcame a nine-minute stretch
without a field goal in the first half and a ten-point deficit in
the second half to win the consolation game of the Avalon Classic
with a 63-51 win over Central State. The Avalon Classic was hosted
by Gannon University.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak
and gave the Fighting Scots a 4-3 record heading into final exams.
Central State is 3-6.
The Fighting Scots led 21-16 following a
three-point play by Samantha Reimer with 9:35 to play. However,
they would not make another basket until 31 seconds remained in
the first half. In between, Edinboro missed ten straight shots and
turned the ball over four times as the Marauders grabbed a ten
point lead at 33-23. The Fighting Scots, shooting 75.0 percent
from the free throw line for the season, even struggled there
during the dry spell, converting just two of seven at the charity
stripe.
Despite the extended stretch, Edinboro trailed
just 33-29 at the half, but Central State would build the lead to
43-33 with 13:14 remaining. Thats when the Fighting Scots
went on a 21-3 run to take a 54-46 lead with exactly five minutes
left. The Marauders never pulled closer than six points the rest
of the game.
Defense proved the big difference in the second
half. Edinboro held Central State to just 21.9 percent shooting
from the floor (7 of 32) for the half and forced 9 turnovers.
Kelly Calderone led Edinboro with 19 points,
adding 7 assists and 5 rebounds. The senior guard earned a spot on
the All-Tournament team. Freshman Kelsey Conklin had her second
career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, helping the
Fighting Scots claim a 46-42 advantage on the boards. Samantha
Reimer, Edinboros other freshman in the starting lineup,
contributed 14 points.
The Fighting Scots will now break for final
exams before returning to action with back-to-back PSAC crossover
doubleheaders on December 19 and 20 against East Stroudsburg and
Kutztown, respectively. |
