EDINBORO, PA The 12th-ranked Edinboro
University wrestling team won eight of team matches to post a 31-6
win at the University at Buffalo on Saturday. The victory boosted
Edinboros record to 7-1 heading into its Eastern Wrestling
opener Sunday as the Fighting Scots host Lock Haven. Edinboro has
won 20 of its last 21 matches. Buffalo fell to 1-1.
The match started at 125 lbs. with freshman
Eric Morrill improving to 5-6 with a 12-3 major decision over Sean
Bauer. Buffalo won the next two matches to take a 6-4 lead. In a
matchup of two nationally-ranked wrestlers at 133 lbs.,
ninth-ranked Mark Budd captured a 4-1 decision against Ricky
Deubel, who came in ranked 15th by InterMat and 16th by Amateur
Wrestling News. Deubel grabbed a 1-0 lead thanks to a
second-period escape, but Budd scored the lone takedown of the
match later in the period. Deubel is now 8-5.
Freshman Daryl Cocozzo, who won a wrestleoff on
Thursday to retain the starting job at 141 lbs., narrowly missed
picking up his second win. Cocozzo ended up falling to 1-7 with a
4-3 loss to Andrew Stella.
Third-ranked Gregor Gillespie improved to 13-0
with a hard-fought 5-2 decision over Ryan Needle at 149 lbs.,
starting a run of six straight wins. The sophomore was in a tie
match at 2-2 following Needles third-period takedown. He
reversed Neede and ended with a point for riding time to boost his
career record to 55-4.
Matt Hill joined Gillespie at 13-0 with a 16-0
technical fall over Scott Rendos at 157 lbs. The senior, ranked
seventh by InterMat and eighth by Amateur Wrestling News, brought
his career record to 86-35. Deonte Penn moved within four falls of
the school record for career falls as he pinned Mike Ragusa at
4:16. The senior now has 38 career falls. Ranked eighth in both
polls, he now has an 11-2 record and is 88-41 for his career.
Sophomore Phil Moricone improved to 11-3 with a
tight 3-2 decision over Nate Rock at 174 lbs. Alex Clemsen then
picked up his 96th career win with a 14-4 major decision against
Jake Blowers at 184 lbs. Clemsen is ranked tenth by Amateur
Wrestling News and 11th by InterMat. He has a 12-1 record and is
96-32 for his career.
Jim Gibson improved to 10-4 with a 3-1 decision
over Ricky Scott at 197 lbs. Joe Fendone ended the day by
defeating Jeff Parker, 7-2. The sophomore is 11-2 and ranked 13th
by InterMat and 18th by Amateur Wrestling News. |
