EDINBORO, PA A first half dry spell
ultimately led to defeat for Edinboro on Tuesday night, as the
Fighting Scots dropped an 82-72 decision to East Stroudsburg in a
PSAC crossover contest. The loss snapped a three-game winning
streak for the Fighting Scots, as they fell to 6-3. East
Stroudsburg is now 6-2.
The Fighting Scots held a 23-21 lead with 7:51
to play after Devon Knight made a pair of free throws. But East
Stroudsburg would score the next 21 points to take a 42-23 lead
before settling for a 42-27 halftime advantage. Edinboro did not
make a basket over the final 8 minutes 10 seconds of the first
half, and missed its final six shots.
After missing their first four shots of the
second half to make it ten straight misses, the Fighting Scots
began chipping away at the ESU lead. However, every time the
Fighting Scots would get clolse, the Warriors answered with a
three-pointer or forced a turnover.
Edinboro pulled to within eight points at 52-44
with 14:11 remaining, but the Warriors answered with five straight
points. Edinboro came with a 6-0 run of its own, with Daren
Tielsch scoring all three baskets, to make it 57-50 with 11:51
remaining. ESU answered with a three-pointer.
After East Stroudsburg built the lead back up
to 12 points at 75-63 with 3:30 to play, the Fighting Scots
rallied with eight straight points, with Tielsch starting it with
a dunk, followed by a Curtis Ingram layup and a three-point play
by Knight. That made it 75-70 with 1:51 remaining. Edinboros
strategy to foul backfired as the Warriors made seven of eight
free throws the rest of the way. In fact, they did not score a
basket in the final 3 minutes 41 seconds.
Edinboro came into the game giving up just 59.9
ppg., but the 82 points scored by the Warriors tied the
season-high allowed. In addition, East Stroudsburg shot 50.9
percent from the floor, the first team to shoot 50 percent against
Edinboro this season.
A hot second half helped Edinboro finish at
43.5 percent from the floor. The Warriors made 7 of 12
three-pointers, however, while Edinboro was just 1 of 11 from
beyond the arc. In addition, free throw whooting again proved a
major weakness, as the Fighting Scots made just 11 of 22 free
throws while ESU was 17 of 22.
Daren Tielsch scored a season-high 29 points to
lead the Fighting Scots. The 68 senior made 13 of 23
field goals but was just 3 of 9 from the line. He fell one rebound
shy of a double-double, finishing with 9 rebounds. Curtis Ingram
was the only other Scot in double figures, ending with 18 points
to go with 7 boards.
Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday,
completing its back-to-back games against PSAC East foes with a
7:30 p.m. tipoff against Kutztown.
