December 20, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – With four players scoring in double figures, the Edinboro University men’s basketball team snapped Kutztown’s five-game winning streak with a 75-62 win in a PSAC crossover contest on Wednesday night. The victory came one night after the Fighting Scots suffered an 82-72 loss to East Stroudsburg.

The victory leaves Edinboro with a 7-3 record heading into the New Year. The Fighting Scots do not return to action until January 2 when they host Alderson-Broaddus. Kutztown falls to 8-2 with the loss.

Kutztown jumped out to a six-point lead with 3:48 to play at 30-24. But the Fighting Scots scored the final nine points of the half to take a 33-30 lead at intermission. Daren Tielsch accounted for seven of the points, part of a game-high 21-point effort.

Edinboro built the lead to as many as ten points early in the second half, but the Golden Bears cut the lead to one point at 46-45 with just over ten minutes to play. The margin was still just two points at 59-57 with 5:35 left in the game when the Fighting Scots pulled away. Devon Knight opened a 12-4 run with a three-pointer, and Vlad Kovalevsky made it six straight points with a rebound basket and free throw.

All told, Edinboro outscored the Golden Bears, 42-32, over the final twenty minutes. The Fighting Scots shot 51.7 percent from the floor while holding Kutztown to just 31.6 percent.

Tielsch recorded his sixth double-double in nine games with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The 6’8” senior made 9 of 14 field goals and was 3 of 6 from the line. Curtis Ingram added 17 points, with Knight making 7 of 11 field goals to finish with 16 points. Though saddled with foul troubles, Joseph Jones finished with 11 points.

The Fighting Scots also received a strong showing from freshmen Dan Walsh and Kovalevsky. Walsh, a 6’2” guard, finished with 7 rebounds and 3 assists, while Kovalevsky, a 6’7” forward, contributed 5 points and a season-high 8 rebounds.

Kovalevsky was also part of a group of players who helped hold Dave Ben, the second-leading scorer in the PSAC at 20.8 ppg., to 16 points. He made just 4 of 22 field goals.

Edinboro shot just 42.0 percent for the game, but held Kutztown to 30.8 percent. That came on the heels of East Stroudsburg shooting 50.9 percent from the floor, the first team shoot better than 50 percent against the Boro this year. The Fighting Scots also held a 50-47 advantage on the glass and turned the ball over just 12 times.
