EDINBORO, PA With four players scoring
in double figures, the Edinboro University mens basketball
team snapped Kutztowns five-game winning streak with a 75-62
win in a PSAC crossover contest on Wednesday night. The victory
came one night after the Fighting Scots suffered an 82-72 loss to
East Stroudsburg.
The victory leaves Edinboro with a 7-3 record
heading into the New Year. The Fighting Scots do not return to
action until January 2 when they host Alderson-Broaddus. Kutztown
falls to 8-2 with the loss.
Kutztown jumped out to a six-point lead with
3:48 to play at 30-24. But the Fighting Scots scored the final
nine points of the half to take a 33-30 lead at intermission.
Daren Tielsch accounted for seven of the points, part of a
game-high 21-point effort.
Edinboro built the lead to as many as ten
points early in the second half, but the Golden Bears cut the lead
to one point at 46-45 with just over ten minutes to play. The
margin was still just two points at 59-57 with 5:35 left in the
game when the Fighting Scots pulled away. Devon Knight opened a
12-4 run with a three-pointer, and Vlad Kovalevsky made it six
straight points with a rebound basket and free throw.
All told, Edinboro outscored the Golden Bears,
42-32, over the final twenty minutes. The Fighting Scots shot 51.7
percent from the floor while holding Kutztown to just 31.6
percent.
Tielsch recorded his sixth double-double in
nine games with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The 68
senior made 9 of 14 field goals and was 3 of 6 from the line.
Curtis Ingram added 17 points, with Knight making 7 of 11 field
goals to finish with 16 points. Though saddled with foul troubles,
Joseph Jones finished with 11 points.
The Fighting Scots also received a strong
showing from freshmen Dan Walsh and Kovalevsky. Walsh, a 62
guard, finished with 7 rebounds and 3 assists, while Kovalevsky, a
67 forward, contributed 5 points and a season-high 8
rebounds.
Kovalevsky was also part of a group of players
who helped hold Dave Ben, the second-leading scorer in the PSAC at
20.8 ppg., to 16 points. He made just 4 of 22 field goals.
Edinboro shot just 42.0 percent for the game,
but held Kutztown to 30.8 percent. That came on the heels of East
Stroudsburg shooting 50.9 percent from the floor, the first team
shoot better than 50 percent against the Boro this year. The
Fighting Scots also held a 50-47 advantage on the glass and turned
the ball over just 12 times. |
