EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro womens
basketball team narrowly missed upsetting seventh-ranked Glenville
State in the opening round of the 2006 Edinboro Classic. The
Fighting Scots suffered a dry spell late in the game, with
Glenville State taking advantage to come away with a 62-57 win.
Edinboro falls to 6-4 with the loss, while the
Lady Pioneers snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 7-2.
Trailing 54-52 with 2:05 remaining, Samantha
Reimer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) went to the line. After making
the first free throw, the freshman missed the second, leaving the
Fighting Scots trailing by a point. Glenville State proceeded to
run off six straight points, as Edinboros next four
possessions resulted in three turnovers and a missed
three-pointer.
The Fighting Scots went almost two minutes
without scoring, as the Lady Pioneers went ahead 60-53. Kelly
Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) finally broke the drought
with a jumper, but just 14 seconds remained. Casey Taylor sealed
the win with a pair of free throws.
Glenville State grabbed the lead for good with
just over 11 minutes remaining, but the Lady Pioneers could were
unable to shake the Fighting Scots. Interestingly enough,
Glenville State built its biggest lead of the night with preseason
All-American and leading scorer Rachel Redick out of the game with
four fouls. Edinboro held a 36-35 lead when Redick went out of the
game, but the Lady Pioneers proceeded to go on a 15-5 run to take
its largest lead of the night at 50-41 with 8:10 remaining.
Edinboro answered with a three-pointer by Rae
Sherred (Cambridge Springs, OH/Cambridge Springs), and
Calderone followed with a pair of free throws to make it 50-46.
The Fighting Scots closed to within two points with 5:08 to play
on Agnieszka Michalows (Krakow, Poland/Krakow #32)
pair of free throws. Redick returned with the score 52-50.
Calderone, Sherred and Reimer combined for 48
of Edinboros 57 points. Calderone led the Fighting Scots
with 21 points, making 7 of 13 field goals and 6 of 8 free throws.
She added 6 steals. In addition, she turned in a strong defensive
effort against Redick, limiting her to seven points. Sherred added
13 points, while Reimer contributed 12 markers. Christy Alltop,
Melanie Oliver and Taylor all scored 14 points to lead Glenville
State.
Glenville State shot 45.6 percent from the
floor, while Edinboro came in at 40.0 percent. The Fighting Scots
made 16 of 21 free throws, while the Lady Pioneers were 7 of 12 at
the charity striple. However, the Fighting Scots were guilty of 28
turnovers, while Glenville State turned it over 24 times.
In the predetermined schedule, Edinboro will
face West Liberty State at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, while Glenville
State and Ashland will meet at 1:00 p.m.
In a mild upset, Ashland (7-5) defeated West
Liberty State (5-2), 75-69, in the other first round game behind
Amber Ralls 31 points.
