Edinboro Wrestlers in Second Place After First Day of Southern Scuffle
Eight Wrestlers Reach Quarterfinals, Clemsen Reaches 100 Career Wins
December 29, 2006

Complete Southern Scuffle Results

EDINBORO, PA – With eight wrestlers advancing to the quarterfinals and 13 of 15 wrestlers remaining alive, Edinboro sits in second place after the first day of competition at the Southern Scuffle. The University of North Carolina-Greensboro is hosting the event at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.

Minnesota, ranked second nationally, leads the Southern Scuffle with 59.5 points. The Fighting Scots are next with 53.5 points. Edinboro entered the tournament ranked 12th. Cornell, ranked 13th, is third with 52 points, followed by top-ranked Missouri (50.5) and Cal St. Bakersfield (42.5). A total of eight teams ranked in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I Top 25 are in the 32-team field.

Deonte Penn, Alex Clemsen and Joe Fendone led the contingent of eight wrestlers to reach the quarterfinals, as all three went 3-0. Penn, the number one seed at 165 lbs., improved to 15-2, and in the process picked up his 40th career fall. That came against North Carolina State’s Obie Simpson at 4:31, leaving him two falls shy of the school record.

Clemsen, seeded third at 184 lbs., became the 17th wrestler in Edinboro history to reach 100 career wins with his third victory. The victory came via injury default over Josh Arnone of Cornell, and left the senior with a 100-32 record. He is 16-1 this year.

Fendone is seeded fourth at heavyweight and boosted his record to 15-2 with three wins. That included a 3-0 decision over 13th-seeded Zach Hammond of Cornell.

Five other grapplers won both of their matches to reach the quarterfinals. Gregor Gillespie, the number two seed at 149 lbs. and ranked third nationally, continued towards a possible meeting with top-ranked Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota in impressive fashion. The sophomore won both of his bouts by technical fall, needing less than five minutes in both matches. He is now 16-0.

Matt Hill, the top-seeded wrestler at 157 lbs., won by fall at 2:31 over UNC-Greensboro’s Mate Berryman in his opening match, then moved on with a narrow 3-2 decision over Minnesota’s Tyler Safratowich. Like Gillespie, Hill is 16-0.

Sophomores Ricky Deubel and Phil Moricone advanced to the quarterfinals at 133 and 174 lbs., respectively. Both wrestlers are seeded fifth. Deubel is now 11-5, while Moricone improves to 14-3.

The final quarterfinalist is a bit of a surprise, as Pat Bradshaw is in the final eight at 197 lbs. The redshirt freshman is Edinboro’s backup at that weight. He opened with a 4-2 decision against Old Dominion’s David Mendoza, then upset sixth-seeded Harry Zander of George Mason, 5-4. Bradshaw has a 10-3 record. The regular starter, Jim Gibson, dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Yura Malamura of Minnesota in his opening match, but came back with a 7-3 win over Eric Cassidy of Pittsburgh in the wrestlebacks. Gibson has a 12-5 record.

Action continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. For complete results go to www.southernscuffle.com.
