EDINBORO, PA Edinboro University has had
a pair of basketball players recognized by the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference. Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge)
was named the PSAC West Womens Basketball Player of the
Week, while Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) was
named the PSAC West Mens Basketball Co-Player of the Week.
Tielsch shared the award with Lock Havens James Chappell.
The awards took into account games through January 3.
Calderone won the award despite seeing the
Fighting Scots lose twice during the period. However, it was
through no fault of the 57 guard. Competing in the
Edinboro Classic, she scored 21 points in a 62-57 loss to
seventh-ranked Glenville State. In addition, she had 8 rebounds, 6
steals, 4 assists and made 7 of 13 field goals and 6 of 8 free
throws. The next day Edinboro suffered a 73-63 loss to West
Liberty. Calderone matched her career high with 32 points, making
13 of 23 field goals and 4 of 4 free throws. She also had 4
rebounds and 4 assists. She ended up playing 79 of a possible 80
minutes.
On the season, Calderone is averaging a
team-leading 19.9 ppg. and 5.3 rpg., third on the team. She also
leads the Fighting Scots with 50 assists and 37 steals. She is
shooting 43.6 percent from the floor (65 of 149) and 84.3 percent
from the line (75 of 89).
Tielsch played just once this week, but
Alderson-Broaddus had no answers for his power inside moves. The 68
senior bulled his way to a season-high 30 points in an 84-67 win.
He made 13 of 20 field goals and was 4-for-4 from the line. In
addition, he pulled down 11 rebounds to finish with his seventh
double-double in ten games.
Tielsch ledas the Fighting Scots both in
scoring and rebounding at 17.8 ppg. and 11.3 rpg. He is shooting
54.7 percent from the floor (76 of 139). He also stands second on
the team in assists (25), steals (14), and blocked shots (10).
Both the mens and womens basketball
teams return to action on Saturday, January 6 at Cheyney. The
womens team brings a 6-5 record into the contest, while the
men are 8-3.
