EDINBORO, PA The visiting Edinboro mens
basketball team continued to find Cope Hall a difficult place to
win on Saturday. The Fighting Scots shot a season-low 25.9 percent
as Cheyney snapped Edinboros two-game winning streak with a
57-41 win.
Edinboro has now lost five of its last six
games at Cope Hall, including the last two years. The Fighting
Scots are 8-4, while Cheyney is 7-7. The Wolves were coming off a
win over 13th-ranked Seattle.
An eight-minute drought to end the first half
left the Fighting Scots trailing 33-17 at the half. Edinboro did
not make a basket over the final 8 minutes and 12 seconds. The
Fighting Scots managed just a pair of free throws during that
period. The score was tied at 13-13 before Cheyney scored the next
nine points, part of a 20-4 run to end the half. Edinboro made
just 5 of 22 shots (22.7 percent) in the first half.
Edinboro would close no closer than 11 points
at 52-41 with 2:40 to play, but the Wolves scored the final five
points of the game.
Daren Tielsch led Edinboro with 11 points, as
the senior forward moved into 22nd place in career scoring with
1,103 points. He came into the game shooting 44.1 percent from the
line, and didnt help that figure by going 3-for-11. Tielsch
also led Edinboro with 8 rebounds.
Joseph Jones was the only other Scot in double
digits with 10 points. However, the sophomore guard made just 3 of
12 field goals, as the backcourt combined to make just 6 of 26
shots.
While Edinboro was finishing with a season-low
shooting percentage, Cheyney became just the second team to shoot
50 percent from the floor against Edinboro this year, making 25 of
50 shots. The Wolves also held a 43-31 advantage on the glass.
The Fighting Scots begin PSAC West action on
Wednesday, January 10, hosting Shippensburg. Tipoff at McComb
Fieldhouse is 7:30 p.m. The contest will be the first between the
two since Edinboro upset Shippensburg in the PSAC Championship
game. The Red Raider were chosen first in this years PSAC
West Preseason Poll, while the Fighting Scots were picked second.
