Official Press Release

Shooting Woes Lead to 57-41 Men’s Loss at Cheyney
Edinboro Loses for Fifth Time in Last Six Meetings at Cope Hall
January 6, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – The visiting Edinboro men’s basketball team continued to find Cope Hall a difficult place to win on Saturday. The Fighting Scots shot a season-low 25.9 percent as Cheyney snapped Edinboro’s two-game winning streak with a 57-41 win.

Edinboro has now lost five of its last six games at Cope Hall, including the last two years. The Fighting Scots are 8-4, while Cheyney is 7-7. The Wolves were coming off a win over 13th-ranked Seattle.

An eight-minute drought to end the first half left the Fighting Scots trailing 33-17 at the half. Edinboro did not make a basket over the final 8 minutes and 12 seconds. The Fighting Scots managed just a pair of free throws during that period. The score was tied at 13-13 before Cheyney scored the next nine points, part of a 20-4 run to end the half. Edinboro made just 5 of 22 shots (22.7 percent) in the first half.

Edinboro would close no closer than 11 points at 52-41 with 2:40 to play, but the Wolves scored the final five points of the game.

Daren Tielsch led Edinboro with 11 points, as the senior forward moved into 22nd place in career scoring with 1,103 points. He came into the game shooting 44.1 percent from the line, and didn’t help that figure by going 3-for-11. Tielsch also led Edinboro with 8 rebounds.

Joseph Jones was the only other Scot in double digits with 10 points. However, the sophomore guard made just 3 of 12 field goals, as the backcourt combined to make just 6 of 26 shots.

While Edinboro was finishing with a season-low shooting percentage, Cheyney became just the second team to shoot 50 percent from the floor against Edinboro this year, making 25 of 50 shots. The Wolves also held a 43-31 advantage on the glass.

The Fighting Scots begin PSAC West action on Wednesday, January 10, hosting Shippensburg. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is 7:30 p.m. The contest will be the first between the two since Edinboro upset Shippensburg in the PSAC Championship game. The Red Raider were chosen first in this year’s PSAC West Preseason Poll, while the Fighting Scots were picked second.
