Edinboro Women Make It Eight in Row vs. Cheyney, 65-51
Calderone Scores 30 Points in Road Win
January 6, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – Kelly Calderone reached the 30-point plateau for the second straight game to lead the Edinboro women’s basketball team to a 65-51 win at Cheyney on Saturday. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Fighting Scots as Edinboro improved to 7-5. Cheyney falls to 3-7. Edinboro has now won eight straight games against the Wolves.

After earlier in the week being named the PSAC West Player of the Week, in part thanks to a 32-point effort against West Liberty, Calderone led the way with 30 points. She made 9 of 14 field goals, including 2 of 4 three’s, and was 10 of 11 at the line. Calderone moved from 16th to 14th in career scoring with 1,196 points. She has scored in double figures in all 12 games.

Backcourt mate Samantha Reimer added 14 points and 6 assists, as the duo were the only players to score in double figures. Reimer, a freshman, made 7 of 11 free throws.

Edinboro shot 46.5 percent from the floor while limiting the Wolves to 26.0 percent. In addition, the Fighting Scots made 20 of 30 free throws, while Cheyney was 5 of 6 at the charity stripe.

The Fighting Scots led from start to finish, scoring the game’s first eight points. Rachel Johnson opened the scoring with a layup, followed by a pair of free throws by Calderone. Johnson made one of two free throws, then Calderone capped the burst with a layup and free throw. Edinboro eventually built the lead to 17-2 at the 10:48 mark, and held a 31-13 lead at the half. Calderone scored 21 of her points in the first half. Cheyney made just 5 of 30 field goal attempts in the opening twenty minutes.

Cheyney put a scare into the Fighting Scots at the beginning of the second half. The Wolves hit a pair of three-pointers as part of an 11-3 and cut the lead to ten points just over two minutes into the second half.

Edinboro answered with a 9-0 run. Reimer started it with a three-pointer, followed by a Calderone jumper. Kelsey Conklin had back-to-back layups to bring the score to 43-24 with 14:42 to play. Cheyney never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

The Fighting Scots begin PSAC West action on Wednesday, January 10, hosting Shippensburg. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is 5:30 p.m.
