EDINBORO, PA The last time Edinboro and
Shippensburg met, the game wasnt decided until no time
remained on the clock. Curtis Ingrams free throw gave the
Fighting Scots a 52-51 win in the PSAC Championship game.
On Wednesday night the two hooked up at McComb
Fieldhouse in the PSAC West opener for both teams. This one was
decided quite a bit sooner. A 20-6 burst to begin the second half,
including a 10-0 run, fueled Edinboro to a 76-51 win over the Red
Raiders. Shippensburg came in as the preseason favorite in the
PSAC West, while Edinboro was picked second in the coaches poll.
The victory boosted Edinboro to 9-4 and marked
the eighth straight season the Fighting Scots won their PSAC West
opener. Shippensburg is now 8-10.
The two teams battled back-and-forth in the
first half, with Shippensburg outscoring the Fighting Scots 13-2
to grab a 15-9 lead with seven minutes gone in the contest.
Edinboro held the Red Raiders to just one basket over the final
eight minutes to take a 27-23 lead at intermission. Shippensburg
went scoreless for a stretch of six-and-a-half minutes, missing 13
straight shots.
Edinboro broke the game open early in the
second half. Leading 35-30 with just over 16 minutes to play,
Edinboro dropped in four three-pointers during the 20-6 run,
bringing the score to 55-36 with 10:27 left. Joseph Jones did the
outside work, burying three three-pointers, while Daren Tielsch
powered inside for six points.
A Shippensburg three-pointer closed the gap to
16 points, but Edinboro put together its second 10-0 run of the
half to build the lead to 65-39 with 4:10 remaining. Tielsch
started the run with a layup, followed by a pair of free throws by
Devon Knight. Ryan McLemore added a short jumper and a pair of
free throws, and Ingram ended the burst with a dunk following a
Red Raider turnover.
All told, Edinboro outscored Shippensburg,
49-28, in the second half while shooting 51.6 percent from the
floor. The Fighting Scots came into the game ranked last in the
conference in three-point field goal percentage, but sizzled in
the second half, making six of seven. On the night Edinboro made a
season-high 9 three-pointers in 15 attempts.
Edinboro continued its strong defensive play,
holding Shippensburg to 36.7 percent from the floor. The Fighting
Scots entered the game ranked first in the PSAC in field goal
percentage defense. In addition, the Scots held a 44-31 advantage
on the glass.
Tielsch led a contingent of four double figure
scorers with 16 points and 14 rebounds, his eighth double-double
in 12 games. Jones turned in a strong all-around game with 14
points, making 4 of 6 three-pointers, along with 6 assists. Ingram
had 11 points and 6 rebounds, but his greatest contribution came
on the defensive end. He held Chuck Davis, last years PSAC
West Player of the Year who came in averaging 18.5 ppg. to just
two points. Davis made 1 of 10 field goals. Knight finished with
10 points, and McLemore pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked 3
shots.
Edinboro concludes PSAC crossover action this
weekend, playing at Mansfield on Saturday, January 13, and at
Bloomsburg on Sunday, January 14. Both games tip off at 3:00 p.m. |
