January 10, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – The last time Edinboro and Shippensburg met, the game wasn’t decided until no time remained on the clock. Curtis Ingram’s free throw gave the Fighting Scots a 52-51 win in the PSAC Championship game.

On Wednesday night the two hooked up at McComb Fieldhouse in the PSAC West opener for both teams. This one was decided quite a bit sooner. A 20-6 burst to begin the second half, including a 10-0 run, fueled Edinboro to a 76-51 win over the Red Raiders. Shippensburg came in as the preseason favorite in the PSAC West, while Edinboro was picked second in the coaches poll.

The victory boosted Edinboro to 9-4 and marked the eighth straight season the Fighting Scots won their PSAC West opener. Shippensburg is now 8-10.

The two teams battled back-and-forth in the first half, with Shippensburg outscoring the Fighting Scots 13-2 to grab a 15-9 lead with seven minutes gone in the contest. Edinboro held the Red Raiders to just one basket over the final eight minutes to take a 27-23 lead at intermission. Shippensburg went scoreless for a stretch of six-and-a-half minutes, missing 13 straight shots.

Edinboro broke the game open early in the second half. Leading 35-30 with just over 16 minutes to play, Edinboro dropped in four three-pointers during the 20-6 run, bringing the score to 55-36 with 10:27 left. Joseph Jones did the outside work, burying three three-pointers, while Daren Tielsch powered inside for six points.

A Shippensburg three-pointer closed the gap to 16 points, but Edinboro put together its second 10-0 run of the half to build the lead to 65-39 with 4:10 remaining. Tielsch started the run with a layup, followed by a pair of free throws by Devon Knight. Ryan McLemore added a short jumper and a pair of free throws, and Ingram ended the burst with a dunk following a Red Raider turnover.

All told, Edinboro outscored Shippensburg, 49-28, in the second half while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor. The Fighting Scots came into the game ranked last in the conference in three-point field goal percentage, but sizzled in the second half, making six of seven. On the night Edinboro made a season-high 9 three-pointers in 15 attempts.

Edinboro continued its strong defensive play, holding Shippensburg to 36.7 percent from the floor. The Fighting Scots entered the game ranked first in the PSAC in field goal percentage defense. In addition, the Scots held a 44-31 advantage on the glass.

Tielsch led a contingent of four double figure scorers with 16 points and 14 rebounds, his eighth double-double in 12 games. Jones turned in a strong all-around game with 14 points, making 4 of 6 three-pointers, along with 6 assists. Ingram had 11 points and 6 rebounds, but his greatest contribution came on the defensive end. He held Chuck Davis, last year’s PSAC West Player of the Year who came in averaging 18.5 ppg. to just two points. Davis made 1 of 10 field goals. Knight finished with 10 points, and McLemore pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.

Edinboro concludes PSAC crossover action this weekend, playing at Mansfield on Saturday, January 13, and at Bloomsburg on Sunday, January 14. Both games tip off at 3:00 p.m.
