EDINBORO, PA The Shippensburg women's
basketball team used a big second half to rally from an 11-point
halftime deficit and record a 63-55 win at Edinboro on Wednesday
night. The Fighting Scots held a 34-23 lead at the half, but were
outscored, 40-21, in the second half.
The contest was the PSAC opener for both teams,
with Edinboro falling to 7-6 overall while Shippensburg improved
to 10-5.
The loss spoiled a brilliant effort by freshman
Kelsey Conklin. The 61 forward accounted for half of
Edinboros points, scoring a season-high 27 points. She added
12 rebounds to register her fourth double-double of the season.
Conklin made 12 of 21 field goals and was 2 of 2 from the line.
Conklin matched her previous season-high with
17 points at the half. The Fighting Scots used an 8-0 run, with
Conklin scoring six of the points, to build a 32-18 lead with 1:58
left in the half.
After shooting just 33.3 percent in the first
half, the Lady Raiders came out on fire in the second half. A 10-3
run early in the half closed the gap to just two points, and they
finally took their first lead of the game on a pair of free throws
by Lauren Beckley with 6:36 remaining. That made the score 49-47.
Rachel Johnsons layup tied the game, but the Fighting Scots
never grabbed the lead again.
Samantha Reimer scored on a layup with 2:01
left to pull Edinboro within one at 56-55. That would be the final
points of the night for the Fighting Scots, as Shippensburg scored
the final seven points of the game, all from the free throw line.
Shippensburg shot 58.3 percent in the second
half to finish at 45.8 percent. Edinboro, meanwhile, made just
26.7 percent of its shots in the second half to end the game at
34.8 percent. The Scots were also guilty of 22 turnovers. In
addition, the Lady Raiders were 16 of 27 at the line, while
Edinboro was just 8 of 9.
The contest was billed as a matchup between the
top two scorers in the PSAC. Beckley came in as the leading scorer
in the conference at 21.0 ppg., while Edinboros Kelly
Calderone was close behind at 20.8 ppg. Beckley finished the night
with 14 points as Rae Sherred turned in a solid defensive showing.
Calderone, however, never did get going as she was harassed by
Megan Fogle. Calderone did not scored until just three seconds
remained in the half, and she would finish the night with a
season-low 4 points. It marked the first time the senior guard
failed to score in double figures in 13 games.
No other Fighting Scot joined Conklin in double
figures. Reimer ended the night with 9 points, and Johnson had 8
points and 7 rebounds.
Edinboro concludes PSAC crossover action this
weekend, playing at Mansfield on Saturday, January 13, and at
Bloomsburg on Sunday, January 14. Both games tip off at 1:00 p.m.
