Edinboro Opens Virginia Duals With 43-0 Win Over Virginia Tech

Virginia Duals Results

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro wrestling team opened action in the 27th Annual Virginia Duals with a convincing 43-0 win over Virginia Tech in its opening match. The Fighting Scots move on in the 16-team field to the quarterfinals against Drexel, a 28-9 winner over Wyoming in its opening match. The Edinboro-Drexel match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, VA.

The shutout was the second straight for the Fighting Scots, who handed Lock Haven a 45-0 defeat in their last dual match on December 10. Edinboro, ranked 12th in the latest USA Today/ InterMat/NWCA Division I Top 25, improves to 9-1. The Fighting Scots have now won 22 of their last 23 dual matches.

Edinboro is seeded second in the Virginia Duals, with Penn State the number one seed. The Nittany Lions advanced to a possible second meeting with Edinboro with a 33-9 win over North Dakota State. Penn State handed Edinboro its lone defeat, 27-9, in the Pennsylvania Duals. Drexel, the Boro’s next opponent, is seeded seventh.

The Fighting Scots received a forfeit win at 125 lbs. to open the match against former EWL rival Virginia Tech, as freshman Eric Morrill (Sandown, NH/Timberlane Regional) improved to 9-8. Ricky Deubel (Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston), ranked 16th by InterMat at 133 lbs., then posted a 13-3 major decision over Sheridan Moran. After a Moran takedown, Deubel scored the next 11 points while improving to 14-9.

Redshirt freshman Joel Webster (Norfolk, CT/Northwestern Regional) won by fall over Andre Johnson at 141 lbs., ending the match at 2:42. Webster is now 10-8. Gregor Gillespie (Webster, NY/ Webster Schroeder) followed with a 12-5 decision over Jon Bonilla-Bowman at 149 lbs. Gillespie, ranked fifth, improves to 20-1.

Tenth-ranked Matt Hill (Freedom, PA/Freedom) boosted his record to 19-1 with a technical fall over Derek Gallagher. Hill won 16-1 at 5:54 to bring his career record to 92-36. At 165 lbs., eighth-ranked Deonte Penn (Solon, OH/ Solon) came away with a 7-2 decision over Eric Decker. Penn improves to 19-2 and 96-41 for his career.

Phil Moricone (Derry, NH/Pinkerton) picked up a 12-1 major decision over Steve Ratley at 174 lbs. The sophomore is now 15-5. In the tightest match of the day, 11th-ranked Alex Clemsen (Moberly, MO/Moberly) needed a takedown with 20 seconds remaining to register a 4-2 win over Steve Borja. With Clemsen leading 2-1 entering the final period, Borja escaped to begin the third period and knot the score at 2-2. Clemsen is now 20-2 on the season and 104-33 for his career.

At 197 lbs., Pat Bradshaw (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) filled in for starter Jim Gibson (Hermitage, PA/Kennedy Christian), who is out with an illness, and came away with a 4-3 decision. The match was decided thanks to a riding time point for Bradshaw, giving the redshirt freshman a 12-6 record.

Joe Fendone (Salem, NH/Central Catholic(Mass.)) picked up Edinboro’s second pin, winning his heavyweight match against Jim Powers by fall at 2:11. The sophomore is now 16-4 and ranked 19th by InterMat.
