EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University mens
basketball team received a quick reminder of how difficult life
can be on the road on Saturday. Playing at Mansfield, a team which
was just 2-10, the Fighting Scots suffered an 80-66 loss. The
setback came just three days after Edinboro had turned in an
impressive 76-51 win over Shippensburg in its PSAC West opener.
The loss dropped Edinboros record to 9-5
and ensured the Fighting Scots a losing record in PSAC crossover
games for just the second time since the concept began in 2000-01.
The Fighting Scots are 2-4 with a contest on Sunday afternoon at
Bloomsburg remaining.
Edinboro entered the Mansfield game with the
top defense in the PSAC in scoring defense (61.4 ppg.) and field
goal percentage defense (36.3 pct.). However, the defense was no
match for a Mountaineer offense which came in averaging 76.9 ppg.
while living off the three-pointer. Mansfield proceeded to 47.8
percent for the game, including making 10 of 22 three-pointers.
The Fighting Scots, meanwhile, were unable to
take advantage of a Mansfield defense which ranked last in the
league in scoring defense (84.0 ppg.) and had given up 80-or-more
points eight times. Turnovers proved Edinboros major
undoing. The Fighting Scots committed 22 turnovers. In addition,
they shot 43.4 percent from the floor. After making a season-high
9 three-pointers in 15 attempts against Shippensburg, Edinboro
made just 2 of 11 three-pointers vs. Mansfield. Finally, Edinboro
converted just 18 of 30 free throws.
The game featured several runs. Mansfield
jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Edinboro answered with seven
straight points, five from Devon Knight. The Mountaineers turned
around with a 16-3 burst midway through the first half for a 27-16
lead. Edinboro could manage but a basket and free throw from Daren
Tielch during the stretch that covered almost six minutes.
Mansfield led 42-33 at the half, but Edinboro
started the half with an 8-0 run to close the margin to 42-41 with
17:43 remaining. Curtis Ingram accounted for six of the eight
points.
Back came the Mountaineers. With seven
consecutive markers, they went up 49-41 with 15:45 to play. That
was followed by an Edinboro run of seven straight points, with
Kyree Brown contributing five points, as the Fighting Scots again
closed to within one at 49-48 with 14:21 to play.
Unfortunately, that was Edinboros last
burst. Mansfield outscored the Fighting Scots 18-8 over the next
seven minutes to grab a 67-56 lead with 7:51 remaining. Edinboro
would get the deficit under double figures just once after that.
Daren Tielsch led Edinboro with 15 points and
10 rebounds, his ninth double-double in 13 games. The 68
senior moved into a tie for 16th place in career rebounds with
622. Brown added 11 points and Ingram had 10.
