Duals Results
EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro wrestling team
reached the finals of the 27th Annual Virginia Duals with a 24-12
win over 22nd-ranked Kent State on Saturday afternoon. The victory
moved the 12th-ranked Fighting Scots, the second seed in the
tournament, into this evenings finals against Penn State,
ranked 10th nationally and the top seed. The Nittany Lions
defeated Rider, 41-0, in the other semifinal.
This evenings championship match will get
underway at 8:30 p.m. at the Hampton Coliseum.
It is a rematch of an earlier match in the
Pennsylvania Duals, with the Nittany Lions handing Edinboro its
only loss, 27-9. Edinboro is now 11-1 while Kent State suffered
its first defeat and falls to 7-1. The Fighting Scots have won 24
of their last 25 matches, the lone loss to Penn State. Edinboro
won the Virginia Duals title in 2000.
Edinboro won seven matches, all but one by
decision. The other was a fall for Deonte Penn at 165 lbs. The pin
over Sli Bastelman at 1:14 gave the senior 43 career falls. That
breaks the school record formerly held by Jason Robison and Tom
Herr. Penn tied the record last night with a fall against Drexel.
Ranked eighth nationally, he is now 21-2 and 98-41 for his career.
Kent State jumped out to the lead with wins in
two of the first three matches, the victories coming against
Edinboros pair of freshman starters. Chad Sportelli
decisioned Eric Morrill at 125 lbs., 6-3. That left Morrill with a
9-10 ledger.
Ricky Deubel knotted the score at 3-3 with a
6-3 decision over Danny Mitcheff at 133 lbs., but the Flashes
answered with a win at 141 lbs., as Clint Sponseller defeated
Daryl Cocozzo, 5-2. Deubel is ranked 16th and has a 16-8 record,
while Cocozzo falls to 7-9.
Fifth-ranked Gregor Gillespie improved his
season record to 22-1, but had quite a battle before prevailing
over Jason McGee, 7-6, at 149 lbs. That started a string of five
straight wins for the Fighting Scots. Matt Hill, ranked tenth at
157 lbs., defeated Kurt Gross, 5-2, followed by the pin by Penn.
Hill is now 21-1 and improved his career record to 94-36.
Phil Moricone gave Edinboro an 18-6 lead with a
3-1 decision over Aaron Miller at 174 lbs., giving the sophomore a
17-5 record. Alex Clemsen followed with his 106th career win, a
10-5 decision over Eric Chine. Ranked 11th at 184 lbs., Clemsen is
now 22-2 in 2006-07 and 106-33 for his career.
The string of Boro wins came to an end at 197
lbs., as Pat Bradshaw was pinned by Ardian Ramadani at 3:25. Joe
Fendone ended the match with a 4-2 decision against Jermail
Porter. Bradshaw is now 12-8, while Fendone moves to 18-4. |
