Official Press Release

Fighting Scots Upset Penn State to Win Virginia Duals Wrestling Championship
Edinboro’s 19-17 Triumph Avenges Lone Loss
January 13, 2007

Virginia Duals Results

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro wrestling team avenged its lone loss of the season on Saturday night, and at the same time came away with the championship of the 27th Annual Virginia Duals. The Fighting Scots, ranked 12th in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I Top 25, upset tenth-ranked Penn State, 19-17, at the Hampton Coliseum.

Penn State had earlier handed Edinboro a 27-9 defeat in the Pennsylvania Duals. The Fighting Scots are now 12-1 after winning all four their matches in the Virginia Duals. The Fighting Scots were the second seed, while the Nittany Lions were the top seed. Edinboro previously won the Virginia Duals in 2000.

After losing the first two bouts, Edinboro proceeded to win the next four matches and five of six for a 19-10 lead entering the final two matches. Penn State was able to pick up bonus points at 197 lbs., as fifth-ranked Phil Davis, last year’s national runner-up, was a 10-0 winner over Pat Bradshaw. That closed the match to 19-14. While PSU’s Aaron Anspach defeated Joe Fendone, 10-4, in the heavyweight match, he was unable to come up with enough points to salvage the match. Fendone, ranked 19th, had defeated Anspach, ranked 13th, earlier in the year, but has since lost twice to him. Bradshaw saw his season record fall to 12-9, while Fendone is now 18-5.

The match opened with Penn State’s Mark McKnight, ranked second, surviving an upset bid by Boro freshman Eric Morrill at 125 lbs. Morrill saw his record fall to 9-11 with an 8-6 defeat.

Ricky Deubel, ranked 16th, fell to 16-9 with a 13-5 loss to sixth-ranked Jake Strayer at 133 lbs., Deubel’s eighth loss to a nationally-ranked opponent. At 141 lbs., freshman Daryl Cocozzo picked up a 4-0 win over Bryan Heller, avenging an earlier 6-1 loss. That boosted Cocozzo’s record to 8-9.

Fifth-ranked Gregor Gillespie started Edinboro on a string of four straight victories. The sophomore improved to 23-1 with an 11-1 major decision against Dan Vallimont at 149 lbs.

Matt Hill followed with his 95th career win, a fall over Jesse Jenkins at 4:58 in the 157 lb. bout. The senior, ranked tenth, has a 22-1 record and is now 95-36 in his career.

Deonte Penn, who earlier in the day set a school record for career falls with his 43rd pin in the Kent State match, gave Edinboro a 16-7 lead with a 7-3 decision over Dave Rella. Penn, ranked eighth at 165 lbs., moved his season mark to 22-2. More importantly, he moved within a win of 100 victories with a career record of 99-41.

Penn State narrowed Edinboro’s lead to 16-10 as third-ranked James Yonushonis edged Phil Moricone, 3-2. Moricone falls to 17-6 with the loss.

Alex Clemsen followed with his 107th career win, a 9-4 decision over Philip Bomberger. Ranked 11th at 184 lbs., Clemsen is now 23-2 in 2006-07 and 107-33 for his career.

Edinboro returns to action on Friday, January 19, hosting Clarion in an EWL match. That contest gets underway at 7:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
