EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak on
Sunday afternoon with a 66-54 win at Bloomsburg in a PSAC
Crossover contest. The win gave the Fighting Scots an 8-7 record.
Bloomsburg fell to 5-10.
Unlike the last two contests when the Fighting
Scots held a halftime lead, this time they were able to hold on to
it. Leading 31-25 at intermission, Edinboro saw he Huskies rally
to tie the game on several occasions in the second half, the last
at 45-45 with 7:12 to play.
That signaled the start of one two big runs the
Fighting Scots had on the day. Over the next five minutes Edinboro
outscored Bloomsburg, 18-2. Included in that was a string of 12
straight points. Leading by four points at 51-47, Samantha Reimer
got it started with a pair of free throws. Rachel Johnson followed
with a layup, then Reimer hit a three-pointer for a 58-47 lead.
Kelly Calderone contributed two free throws, and Rae Sherred
capped the run with a three-pointer to make it 63-47 with just
2:12 remaining.
Edinboros other run came in the first
half, a burst of 11-1 that gave the Fighting Scots a 29-18 lead.
The Huskies would close the margin to six points at the half, as
Edinboro scored just two points over the final four minutes.
The Fighting Scots won the game at the free
throw line, making 14 of 18. Bloomsburg, meanwhile, was just 5 of
8. The Huskies did not attempt a free throw in the second half.
Edinboro shot 41.4 percent from the floor, while Bloomsburg came
in at 42.6 percent. The Fighting Scots held a narrow 35-32 lead in
rebounding, and committed 16 turnovers to 19 for the Huskies.
Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures,
led by Reimer and Calderone with 14 points apiece. Reimer, a
freshman guard, made 4 of 8 field goals, including 2 of 3
three-pointers, and was 4 of 4 at the line. Calderone, a senior
guard, struggled from the floor, making just 4 of 17 shots, but
she was a perfect 6-for-6 at the line. In addition, she
contributed 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 5 steals. She moved up two
spots in career scoring with 1,224, now ranking 11th as she passed
Maria DiVecchio and Marin Hightower.
Sherred broke out of a shooting slump with 12
points, making 5 of 9 field goals, including 2 of 4
three-pointers. Kelsey Conklin, one of two freshmen in Edinboros
starting lineup, was saddled with foul troubles, but still
finished with 10 points. The 61 forward had scored 50
points in her previous two games.
Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday,
January 17, hosting Slippery Rock as PSAC West play continues.
