EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens basketball team made a valiant comeback from a
19-point deficit on Wednesday night, only to see visiting Slippery
Rock make eight of ten free throws over the final three minutes to
edge the Fighting Scots, 64-61.
The loss evened Edinboros record at 8-8,
but more importantly, the Fighting Scots fell to 0-2 in PSAC West
action. Both defeats have come at home, where Edinboro is just
3-6. Slippery Rock improved to 7-9 and 1-1 in league play.
Edinboro scored the first five points of the
game, but Slippery Rock dominated the rest of the half. A 19-3
run, including ten straight points to close it out, left The Rock
with a 25-10 lead with 8:47 to play. The lead eventually grew to
19 points at 41-22 before the Fighting Scots staged a brief
comeback to make it 42-26 at intermission.
The Fighting Scots opened the second half with
a 5-0 run to pull to within 11 points, but Slippery Rock would
recover to build the margin back up to 17 points at 53-36 with
13:58 remaining. Edinboro proceeded to go on a 17-1 run, as The
Rock went stone cold from the floor. A 12-0 run, with five
different players scoring, left Edinboro within a point at 54-53.
After not leading since early in the game, the
Fighting Scots finally reclaimed the lead at 58-56 on a pair of
free throws by Kelly Calderone with 3:04 to play. Slippery Rock
was in the midst of going without a basket for the 14 minutes and
35 seconds of the game. For the rest of the game The Rock missed
its final 18 shots and committed seven turnovers.
Slippery Rock came into the game ranked fourth
in the PSAC in free throw percentage, and proved efficient at the
end. With 2:53 to play, Nijha McNeely made a pair of free throws
to tie the game at 58-58. Neither team scored for the next two
minutes, but McNeely made one of two free throws with 47 seconds
remaining for a 59-58 SRU lead. The Rock made five more free
throws to take a 64-58 lead, but Edinboros Samantha Reimer
canned a three-pointer to make it 64-61 with six seconds Left.
Edinboro was unable to force a turnover, or even foul, as the game
ended.
After shooting 66.7 percent from the floor in
the first half, Slippery Rock made just 5 of 25 shots in the
second half to finish at 44.2 percent. Edinboro warmed from a 30.0
percent figure in the first to finish at 35.1 percent. The
Fighting Scots were dominated on the glass, 42-30, but made 7 of
22 three-pointers compared to 2 of 3 for Slippery Rock.
Kelly Calderone led four Fighting Scots in
double figures with 15 points, but she shot just 4 of 16 from the
floor. The senior guard did go 6-for-6 at the line, and had 5
assists. Reimer had 13 points and 4 assists, while fellow freshman
Kelsey Conklin finished with 11 points. Rachel Johnson contributed
10 points.
The Fighting Scots return to action on
Saturday, January 20, playing at Indiana(Pa.). Tipoff begins at
1:00 p.m. |
