EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University mens
basketball team used a dominating second half performance to
improve to 3-0 in PSAC West action with a 63-51 win at
Indiana(Pa.). The victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 12-5
overall, including three straight, while IUP falls to 3-11 and 1-1
in league play. It also marked the third straight win for Edinboro
at Memorial Field House.
A tight first half saw neither team lead by
more than six points, with the Crimson Hwaks taking a 28-26 lead
into intermission. Neither team shot well from the field, as
Edinboro was at 35.5 percent and IUP 33.3 percent.
The Fighting Scots warmed up in the second
half, however, shooting 51.7 percent from the floor. The top
defensive team in the PSAC, Edinboro continued to play strong on
the defensive end of the floor, holding IUP to 25.9 percent (7 of
27) over the final twenty minutes. Edinboro outscored the Crimson
hawks 37-23 in the half.
Edinboro grabbed the lead for good with 18:14
remaining on a jumper by Devon Knight (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn
Hills) to make it 32-30, but the Fighting Scots were unable to
shake IUP until midway through the half. Leading by five at 42-37
with 13:36 left, Edinboro used an 8-0 run to pull ahead by 13 at
5037 with 10:05 left. Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour)
started the burst with a tip-in, followed by a Knight layup. Joseph
Jones (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) followed with a jumper, and
Tielsch capped the spurt with a dunk.
IUP made one run at the Scots, closing the gap
to six at 52-46 with 6:06 to play. But Edinboro responded with the
next six points, a conventional three-point play by Tielsch and a
three-point jumper from Jones, to end any comeback hopes.
Tielsch, a 68 senior, led Edinboro
with 19 points, 13 in the second half, and fell one rebound shy of
his tenth double-double, finishing with a game-high 9 rebounds. He
moved into 15th place in career scoring with 1,187 points, and
climbed into 15th place, as well, in career rebounds with 642.
Knight added a career-high 18 points, a2 in the second half. Jones
was also in double digits with 10 markers.
Edinboro ended the game shooting 43.3 percent
from the floor, along with making 6 of 11 free throws. IUP ended
the day at 29.6 percent, but stayed in the game by making 15 of 22
free throws. Edinboro held a 43-37 margin on the glass.
The Fighting Scots will look to make it four
straight wins on Wednesday, January 24 when they host Franciscan
at 7:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. |
