Official Press Release

Edinboro Picks Up First PSAC West Women's Basketball Victory
Strong Defensive Effort Leads to 69-52 Win at Lock Haven
January 27, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – This is getting to be a tough Edinboro University women’s basketball team to figure out. After losing its first three games in PSAC West competition, two of those at home, the Fighting Scots turned in a strong performance on Saturday and picked up a 69-52 win at Lock Haven.

The victory evened Edinboro’s record at 9-9 and snapped a two-game losing streak. Lock Haven falls to 9-10 and 2-3 in the PSAC West. Oddly enough, Edinboro is just 3-6 at McComb Fieldhouse, but 6-3 away from home.

Edinboro ended the game shooting 40.0 percent from the floor while holding Lock Haven to 29.5 percent. The Fighting Scots also made 5 of 15 three-pointers, while the Lady Eagles missed all five attempts from beyond the arc. Even a subpar day at the free throw line didn’t have an impact. Edinboro entered the game leading the PSAC in free throw percentage at 74.9 percent, but went just 20 of 40.

The Fighting Scots used several runs to put away the Lady Eagles. Edinboro jumped to a 25-10 lead late in the first half before Lock Haven closed to 28-18 at the half. The Lady Eagles made just 5 of 24 shots from the floor.

Lock Haven closed to within five at 29-24 with 17:46 remaining, but the Scots followed with a 10-1 run. Kelly Calderone got it started with a three-pointer, followed by a Kelsey Conklin jumper. Conklin then scored on a layup, and Samantha Reimer made it 39-25 with a three-pointer.

Back came the Lady Eagles, as they closed to 45-37 with 8:52 to play. Over the next three minutes Edinboro outscored Lock Haven, 11-1, for a 56-38 lead. Rachel Johnson got it started with a layup, with Reimer following with a pair of free throws. Calderone made two more free throws, then Reimer added two at the charity stripe. A Calderone three ended the burst.

The combination of Calderone and freshmen Conklin and Reimer combined for 51 of Edinboro’s 69 points. Calderone led the way with 19 points, as the senior guard moved into ninth place in career scoring with 1,281 points. She added 9 rebounds. Reimer scored 17 points, going 10 of 15 from the free throw line, while adding 4 assists and 4 steals. Conklin finished with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 steals.

Edinboro returns to action on Monday, January 29, playing at Clarion. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m., with the Fighting Scots in the midst of a stretch of five road games in six games.
