Clarion Snaps Ten-Game Losing Streak With 75-69 Win Over Edinboro
Late Rally Falls Short Despite Career-High 31-Point Effort by Ingram
January 29, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University men’s basketball team staged a furious comeback at Clarion but fell short as the Golden Eagles came away with a 75-69 win on Monday night. The Fighting Scots lost their second straight game to fall to 13-7 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC West. Clarion snapped a ten-game losing streak while improving to 6-12 and 1-4, respectively.

Clarion held a ten-point lead at 63-53 with 2:44 to play when Edinboro made a last run. Layups by Daren Tielsch and Curtis Ingram, with Ingram adding a free throw, closed the margin to 63-58 with 1:43 to play. Bobby Franklin made one of two free throws for Clarion, but Edinboro answered with a Devon Knight jumper to make it 64-60 with 1:28 left.

Lamar Richburg’s layup boosted the lead back to six points for Clarion, but Joseph Jones’s three-pointer made it 66-63 with 55 seconds left. Edinboro finally pulled to within a point at 68-67 with 35 seconds showing as Tielsch made one of two free throws. However, Clarion would score the final seven points, all from the free throw line.

In Saturday’s loss at Lock Haven, the Fighting Scots could look at poor shooting as the cause for the loss. But while only shooting 41.4 percent from the floor, not far off the season average, the Fighting Scots rode a hot night from Ingram to go 8 of 18 on three-pointers, and made 11 of 13 free throws.

Unfortunately, Clarion was able to solve the top defensive team in the PSAC, shooting 46.6 percent from the floor. The 75 points represented the most scored against Edinboro since Mansfield put up 80 points on January 13, a span of seven games.

The loss spoiled a career-best effort by Ingram, who made 11 of 15 field goals, including 7 of 9 three-pointers, and was 2 of 3 from the line for 31 points. Tielsch was the only other Scot in double figures with 17 points. He moved into 12th place in career scoring with 1,230 points. The rest of the Scots shot a combined 8 of 35 from the floor, although Ryan McLemore pulled down 14 rebounds.

Edinboro will seek to break its two-game losing streak on Wednesday, January 31 when it hosts California(Pa.) in the friendly confines of McComb Fieldhouse, where it is 10-2. The Vulcans entered Monday’s play undefeated in PSAC West play with a 4-0 record, and 15-3 overall.
