EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens basketball team let a 12-point second-half lead slip
away, then scored the final five points of the game to hand
Clarion a 55-50 defeat. The victory was the second in the row for
the Fighting Scots, as they improved to 10-9 overall and 2-3 in
the PSAC West. Clarion falls to 6-13 and 1-4, respectively.
The Fighting Scots play their lone home game in
a stretch of six games on Wednesday, hosting California(Pa.). But
they may well wish they were playing on the road. Edinboro has a
7-3 record on the road, but just 3-6 at McComb Fieldhouse.
Edinboro led by ten points at the half, 30-20,
and built the lead to 36-24 with 17:19 to play. But in the next
10-and-a-half minutes Clarion outscored Edinboro, 20-5, to grab a
44-41 lead with 6:47 remaining. The Fighting Scots made just one
basket during that period, a three-pointer by Samantha Reimer.
Edinboro rallied for a two-point lead, but the
Golden Eagles tied the game at 50-50 on a Jessica Albanese basket
with 46 seconds left. Kelly Calderone scored on a layup with 30
seconds left to give Edinboro the lead for good. Reimer made one
of two free throws with 16 seconds to play, then made two more
free throws with three seconds left.
The Fighting Scots led for much of the first
half thanks to a 14-2 run which included 11 straight points.
Trailing 3-2, Rae Sherred gave Edinboro the lead with a layup.
Rachel Johnson followed with a layup, the Jen Boykin and Calderone
hit jumpers. Kelsey Conklin scored on a layup and then made one of
two free throws to complete 11-0 run. Edinboro would lead 30-20 at
the half, holding the Golden Eagles to just 7 of 24 from the
floor.
Calderone was the lone Fighting Scot in double
figures, finishing with 22 points. The senior guard made 8 of 16
field goals, including a three-pointer, and was 5 of 6 from the
line. Conklin added 9 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds.
Edinboro shot 39.2 percent from the floor while
holding Clarion to 35.8 percent. The difference came from beyond
the three-point line, as the Fighting Scots were 4 of 12 while
Clarion missed all seven attempts.
