Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University women’s basketball team finally snapped a string of 12 straight losses to California(Pa.) on Wednesday night, handing the visiting Vulcans a 77-59 defeat. It marked the Fighting Scots’ first win over the PSAC powerhouse since a 71-59 win at McComb Fieldhouse during the 2000-01 campaign.

The victory was the third straight for the Fighting Scots as they improved to 11-9 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC West. Cal, who was minus leading scorer and rebounder Kim Nowakowski, fell to 13-7 and is also 3-3 in league play.

Cal would lead just twice in the contest, once at 2-0 and the second at 8-6 with 14:03 remaining. An 18-4 run, with Kelsey Conklin scoring seven points and Rachel Johnson six, gave Edinboro a 24-12 lead with 7:46 remaining in the first half. The Fighting Scots closed the half with an 11-5 run as the lead grew to 42-24 at the half.

Edinboro shot a sizzling 57.1 percent from the floor in the first half, but cooled off in the second half to 42.9 percent. Even still, the lead grew to 21 points at 48-27 with 16:59 to play on Rae Sherred’s jumper. It was still 20 points at 62-42 with just under ten minutes to play when Cal mounted a comeback. The Vulcans closed the gap to 11 points at 64-53 with 6:19 to play thanks to an 11-2 run.

The Fighting Scots would made just three field goals over the final ten minutes, but they made good use of the charity stripe. After Cal pulled to within 11 points, Edinboro went 11 of 12 from the free throw line to pull away for the victory.

Edinboro entered the game ranked second in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 72.3 percent. However, they were coming off a 20-of-40 performance in Monday’s win at Clarion. On this evening, the Scots returned to form, making 22 of 26 free throws. In addition, they shot 51.0 percent from the floor while holding Cal to 32.3 percent. The Fighting Scots also battled the taller Vulcans on near-even terms on the glass, suffering just a 39-35 deficit.

Calderone led four Boro players in double figures with 26 points. The senior guard made 7 of 18 field goals and was 9 of 10 from the line. She moved into eighth place in career scoring with 1,329 points. Since snapping out of a cold spell four games ago, Calderone is averaging 22.5 ppg.

Samantha Reimer came off the bench to contribute 16 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 figure at the line. Fellow freshman Conklin enjoyed another strong effort with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals, while Johnson totaled 12 points.

Edinboro begins second half PSAC West action on Saturday, February 3, playing at Shippensburg. The Lady Raiders are in second place in the PSAC West with a 4-2 record. They handed Edinboro a 63-55 defeat in the first meeting between the two on January 10.
