Official Press Release

Edinboro Women Win on Road Again to Move Into Second Place in PSAC West
Fighting Scots Turn Over Shippensburg, 65-53
February 3, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – Edinboro entered Saturday’s game at Shippensburg having won just once in its last 17 games at Heiges Field House. Now you can make it twice in the last 18 games on Shippensburg’s homecourt. With four players scoring in double figures, Edinboro posted a 65-53 win over the Lady Raiders.

The Fighting Scots have now reversed a slow start in PSAC West action with their fourth straight win to improve to 4-3 and move into a tie with Shippensburg for second place in the division. Edinboro improves to 12-9 overall, including 8-3 on the road, while Shippensburg falls to 14-8.

The big difference for the Fighting Scots was a 30-7 advantage in points off turnovers. Edinboro forced 23 turnovers while committing just 13. That helped offset a 50-29 advantage for Shippensburg on the glass. However, Kim Mardis helped give Edinboro a presence inside. The 6’3” sophomore came off the bench to block a career-high 7 shots in just 12 minutes.

Edinboro ended up holding Shippensburg to 33.3 percent from the floor while the Fighting Scots made 42.1 percent of their field goal attempts. The Scots were particularly hot from three-point range, making 8 of 16.

Kelly Calderone continued her hot play with a game-high 19 points. It came in stark contrast to her first game against Shippensburg, a 63-55 win for the Lady Raiders, when Edinboro’s leading scorer was held to a season-low four points. The senior guard made 7 of 15 field goals, including 2 of 3 three-pointers, and was 3 of 6 from the line. She moved past Tina Skidmore into seventh place in career scoring with 1,348 points.

Samantha Reimer came off the bench and contributed 14 points, including a 3-for-5 performance on three-pointers. Rae Sherred was 3-for-7 on trifectas and finished with 13 points, while Rachel Johnson had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Kelsey Conklin was unable to match her performance in the first meeting, when she set career-highs with 27 points and 12 rebounds. However, she did contribute 6 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

In the first meeting Edinboro was unable to hold on to an 11-point second-half lead against the Lady Raiders. This time around the Fighting Scots never trailed in the game, as Sherred broke a 2-2 tie with a three-pointer to give the Scots the lead for good.

With Shippensburg trailing by just two at 10-8 with 13:54 remaining in the first half, the Scots went on a 11-3 run to build the margin to 22-11 with 8:24 left. The Lady Raiders never pulled closer than eight points the rest of the half, as Edinboro built the margin to 14 points before settling for a 34-24 lead at the half.

The lead grew to 18 points in the second half thanks to a 9-0 run that left the Boro leading 47-29 with 13:14 to play. Calderone accounted for the first six points with a three-pointer and a conventional three-point play, and Reimer capped it with another three.

Shippensburg threw a scare into the Fighting Scots when it closed the gap to six points at 51-45 with 5:16 remaining. Edinboro answered with a Calderone layup and Sherred three-pointer to make it 56-45, but the Lady Raiders were closed again to six points at 59-53 with just 1:08 remaining.

The Lady Raiders would not score again, however, as Edinboro made 6 of 8 free throws to close out the win.

Edinboro completes a stretch of five road games in six contests as it travels to Slippery Rock on Wednesday, February 7.
