EDINBORO, PA Edinboro entered Saturdays
game at Shippensburg having won just once in its last 17 games at
Heiges Field House. Now you can make it twice in the last 18 games
on Shippensburgs homecourt. With four players scoring in
double figures, Edinboro posted a 65-53 win over the Lady Raiders.
The Fighting Scots have now reversed a slow
start in PSAC West action with their fourth straight win to
improve to 4-3 and move into a tie with Shippensburg for second
place in the division. Edinboro improves to 12-9 overall,
including 8-3 on the road, while Shippensburg falls to 14-8.
The big difference for the Fighting Scots was a
30-7 advantage in points off turnovers. Edinboro forced 23
turnovers while committing just 13. That helped offset a 50-29
advantage for Shippensburg on the glass. However, Kim Mardis
helped give Edinboro a presence inside. The 63
sophomore came off the bench to block a career-high 7 shots in
just 12 minutes.
Edinboro ended up holding Shippensburg to 33.3
percent from the floor while the Fighting Scots made 42.1 percent
of their field goal attempts. The Scots were particularly hot from
three-point range, making 8 of 16.
Kelly Calderone continued her hot play with a
game-high 19 points. It came in stark contrast to her first game
against Shippensburg, a 63-55 win for the Lady Raiders, when
Edinboros leading scorer was held to a season-low four
points. The senior guard made 7 of 15 field goals, including 2 of
3 three-pointers, and was 3 of 6 from the line. She moved past
Tina Skidmore into seventh place in career scoring with 1,348
points.
Samantha Reimer came off the bench and
contributed 14 points, including a 3-for-5 performance on
three-pointers. Rae Sherred was 3-for-7 on trifectas and finished
with 13 points, while Rachel Johnson had 11 points and 8 rebounds.
Kelsey Conklin was unable to match her performance in the first
meeting, when she set career-highs with 27 points and 12 rebounds.
However, she did contribute 6 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 3
steals.
In the first meeting Edinboro was unable to
hold on to an 11-point second-half lead against the Lady Raiders.
This time around the Fighting Scots never trailed in the game, as
Sherred broke a 2-2 tie with a three-pointer to give the Scots the
lead for good.
With Shippensburg trailing by just two at 10-8
with 13:54 remaining in the first half, the Scots went on a 11-3
run to build the margin to 22-11 with 8:24 left. The Lady Raiders
never pulled closer than eight points the rest of the half, as
Edinboro built the margin to 14 points before settling for a 34-24
lead at the half.
The lead grew to 18 points in the second half
thanks to a 9-0 run that left the Boro leading 47-29 with 13:14 to
play. Calderone accounted for the first six points with a
three-pointer and a conventional three-point play, and Reimer
capped it with another three.
Shippensburg threw a scare into the Fighting
Scots when it closed the gap to six points at 51-45 with 5:16
remaining. Edinboro answered with a Calderone layup and Sherred
three-pointer to make it 56-45, but the Lady Raiders were closed
again to six points at 59-53 with just 1:08 remaining.
The Lady Raiders would not score again,
however, as Edinboro made 6 of 8 free throws to close out the win.
Edinboro completes a stretch of five road games
in six contests as it travels to Slippery Rock on Wednesday,
February 7. |
