Bench, Strong Second Half Leads to 76-64 Men's Win at Slippery Rock
February 7, 2007

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – Thanks to a strong second half effort the Edinboro University men’s basketball team posted a 76-64 win at Slippery Rock on Wednesday night. The victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 15-8 overall and 5-3 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock falls to 5-18 and 2-6, respectively.

The Fighting Scots scored the final six points of the first half to grab a 30-26 lead at intermission. Daren Tielsch knotted the score at 26-26 with a layup at the 3:17 mark, and he followed with another to give Edinboro the lead for good. It was the seventh lead change of the second half. Kyree Brown hit a jumper with three seconds left to boost the lead to four points.

Edinboro opened the second half with a 20-10 run to go up 50-36 with 13:27 to play. Curtis Ingram paced the burst with 10 points, hitting a pair of three-pointers. The lead stayed in double digits for all but two instances when The Rock closed to nine points.

After shooting 43.8 percent from the floor and committing nine turnovers in the first half, Edinboro shot 55.2 percent in the second half and turned the ball over just three times. The Fighting Scots ended the game at 49.2 percent from the floor and also made 13 of 18 free throws. They limited Slippery Rock to 41.3 percent shooting from the floor.

Tielsch led the Boro with 18 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Ingram added 16 points, with Joseph Jones ending the game with 10 points, 7 assists, and no turnovers.

Another key to the victory was the play of the bench. While no one put up huge numbers, the group turned in a very strong effort. Brown finished with 8 points, while freshmen Vlad Kovalevsky and Dan Walsh had five points each. Walsh played a very solid floor game. Chris Bess, meanwhile, saw his first action in the last five games and ended up playing 17 minutes. The 6’2”, 240 lb. freshman helped neutralize Joseph Vines, who finished the night with 18 points.

After playing four of its last five games on the road, Edinboro now returns home for three straight games at McComb Fieldhouse. The stretch begins on Saturday, February 10 with Indiana(Pa.) coming in for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
