Four-Game Winning Streak Comes to End As Scots Lose at Slippery Rock, 52-43
February 7, 2007

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – The Edinboro University women’s basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night with a 52-43 loss at Slippery Rock. The Fighting Scots suffered through a dismal shooting night, making just 21.2 percent from the floor, while falling to 12-10 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock is now 9-13 and 3-5, respectively.

A cold-shooting first half saw Edinboro lead 20-15. The Fighting Scots shot 21.1 percent over the first twenty minutes, and Slippery Rock wasn’t much better at 28.6 percent. Both teams were also guilty of numerous turnovers, with Edinboro committing and The Rock 14.

Slippery Rock began to solve Edinboro’s defense in the second half, shooting 60.0 percent to end the game at 43.9 percent, and outscoring Edinboro, 37-23. The Fighting Scots grabbed their largest lead of the second half at six points at 33-27 midway through the half.

Slippery Rock proceeded to score the next nine points to take a 36-33 lead with 6:47 left. Edinboro, meanwhile, endured a stretch of seven minutes without scoring a basket. Even with that stretch, the Scots trailed just 40-39 when Rachel Johnson broke the drought with a layup with 3:48 to play.

That’s when The Rock went on another 9-0 run to take a 49-39 lead with just 1:23 to play. Kelsey Conklin’s layup with just over a minute remaining made it 49-41, and a pair of free throws by Rae Sherred closed the margin to 49-43 with 29 seconds left. But The Rock’s Chere’ Marshall made three of four free throws to close out the game.

Sherred was one of the few bright spots for Edinboro. The junior guard made 4 of 10 three-pointers and was 8-for-8 from the line to finish with a career-high 20 points. Unfortunately, no one else scored more than six points.

After playing five of its last six games on the road, Edinboro returns home to host PSAC West-leading Indiana(Pa.) on Saturday, February 10. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is 1:00 p.m.
