Official Press Release

Depleted Fighting Scots Men Improve to 16-8
February 10, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – With Edinboro’s tallest player out of the lineup with an injury, the shortest player on the roster provided a big lift in a 76-46 win over visiting Indiana(Pa.) on Saturday. Devon Knight (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) scored a career-high 22 points to pace Edinboro to the victory. The Fighting Scots improved to 16-8 and are now 6-3 in the PSAC West. IUP falls to 4-17 and 2-6, respectively.

Edinboro took the court with a depleted roster, as leading rebounder and Division II shot-blocking leader Ryan McLemore (Cleveland, OH/St. Peter Chanel) was out with an injury, as was backup guard Dan Walsh (Moon Township, PA/Moon Area). That left the Fighting Scots with just seven healthy players.

Knight made sure it didn’t matter, scoring 11 of Edinboro’s first 13 points as the Scots jumped out to a 17-2 lead. The 5’9” guard opened the game with a three-pointer, then came up with a steal and layup, followed by another jumper for a 7-0 lead with 16:44 left in the half. After an IUP basket, Edinboro scored ten points in a row, with Knight and Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) contributing four points apiece.

The lead never got under double figures after the 13:07 mark, with Edinboro grabbing a 35-15 lead at intermission. IUP made just 1 of its first 12 shots and ended the half shooting 29.2 percent from the floor and committing 10 turnovers.

Things didn’t get any better in the second half for a young Crimson Hawk squad. They would pull no closer than 18 on four occasions early in the half, and the margin ballooned to 34 points at 74-40 with 1:49 to play.

The final margin of victory marked the largest win for Edinboro over IUP since the very first meeting between the two in 1928-29, a 50-18 win.

Edinboro shot 56.0 percent from the floor in the second half and ended the game at 51.9 percent. The Fighting Scots held a 33-29 advantage on the boards and forced 18 turnovers while committing just 10. IUP ended the game shooting 41.3 percent. It marked the tenth time Edinboro has held an opponent under 60 points this season.

Knight led four players in double figures. The 22 points broke his previous career-high of 18 set in the first meeting with IUP in January, a 63-51 win for the Boro. He made 9 of 15 field goals, including 2 of 4 three-pointers, and was 2 of 3 at the line.

Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) added 17 points, making 7 of 11 field goals, and moved into tenth place in career scoring with 1,292 points. Tielsch also led the Scots with 6 rebounds.

Ingram finished with 13 points, while Joseph Jones (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) made 5 of 7 shots and finished with 11 points.

Today’s contest at McComb Fieldhouse ended a stretch of four games in the previous five on the road. It began a three-game homestand, with the Scots 11-2 at McComb Fieldhouse. They return to action on Saturday, November 17, hosting Lock Haven. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
