Edinboro Drops 78-66 Decision to IUP Women

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University women’s basketball team suffered a 78-66 loss to visiting Indiana(Pa.) on Saturday. The defeat leaves the Fighting Scots with a 12-11 overall record, and 4-5 in the PSAC West. IUP leads the PSAC West with a 7-1 record and is now 17-6 overall. The Crimson Hawks are ranked eighth in the Northeast Region.

Edinboro struggles at home continued, as it fell to 4-7 at McComb Fieldhouse, compared to 8-4 on the road. The Fighting Scots are now tied with Lock Haven for fourth place in the PSAC West, after the Lady Eagles lost to California(Pa.) on Saturday.

The Fighting Scots led once in the game, that at 6-4 with 14:47 to play, as the defenses dominated the game early on. IUP went on a 16-2 run at that point to take a 20-8 lead with just over ten minutes left in the first half.

Edinboro came back with the next ten points, as Rachel Johnson (Oreland, PA/Springfield) and Samantha Reimer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored layups, followed by a pair of free throws by Kelsey Conklin (Edinboro, PA/General McLane), and another Johnson layup. The run ended with Rae Sherred (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge Springs) hitting a jumper.

IUP eventually built the lead back up to nine points at the half at 38-29, outscoring Edinboro 6-1 in the final 80 seconds. Turnovers haunted Edinboro in first half, as it committed 14 that led to 19 IUP points.

Edinboro pulled to within one on several occasions in the second half, but could never regain the lead. It was still a two-point game at 59-57 with 7:16 to play, but the Crimson Hawks ran off the next six points as Edinboro went scoreless for almost three minutes. Reimer hit a jumper to make the score 72-66 with 1:30 to play, but IUP scored the final six points of the contest.

Both teams shot well from the floor, as IUP was at 50.0 percent and Edinboro was at 48.1 percent. Both teams were also guilty of plenty of turnovers, with Edinboro finishing with 27 and IUP 21.

Conklin led Edinboro with 20 points, as the freshman made 8 of 12 field goals and 4 of 5 free throws. She also had 7 rebounds. Reimer came off the bench to score 17 points, making 3 of 8 three-pointers. Johnson finished with 15 points, making 7 of 9 field goals. Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/

Ambridge) was limited to 11 points, but handed out 8 assists and had 7 rebounds. She also moved into sixth place in career scoring with 1,365 career points.

Edinboro is back in action on Tuesday, February 13, playing at Pitt-Johnstown in their final non-conference game.
