EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens basketball team moved a step closer to the PSAC
Playoffs while severely dashing Lock Havens hopes with a
78-56 win over the Lady Eagles. The win snapped a two-game losing
streak for the Fighting Scots as they improved to 13-11 overall
and 5-5 in the PSAC West. Lock Haven is now 11-14 and 4-7,
respectively.
Edinboro has little to enjoy the victory. The
Fighting Scots will make up last Tuesdays postponement at
Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
The Fighting Scots trailed by as many as seven
points in the first half before rallying for a 32-30 lead after
twenty minutes. Edinboro closed with a 12-4 run, capped by Samatha
Reimers (Altoona, PA/Altoona) three-pointer from 25-feet
out in the final seconds. Reimer scored a total of six points in
the run.
An 8-0 run early in the second half broke the
game open. Kelsey Conklin (Edinboro, PA/ General McLane)
started the run by making one of two free throws, then Reimer
added a pair. The two teams then went scoreless for almost two
minutes before a Reimer three made the score 44-34. Rae
Sherred (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge Springs) ended the
outburst with a pair of free throws. With 13:29 remaining, the
Fighting Scots led 46-34. Lock Haven never pulled closer than 10
points the rest of the way.
Four Fighting Scots scored in double digits,
led by Reimer. Who came off the bench to score a game-high 23
points. The freshman guard made 3 of 5 three-pointers and went 10
of 12 from the free throw line. She added 7 rebounds.
Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge)
added 21 points to move into fifth place in career scoring with
1,386 points. She added a career-high 9 assists and went 3-for-3
from the line, giving her 402 career free throws made. That broke
the school record of 400 previously held by Jessica Rowe.
Sherred registered her first career
double-double with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, making
3 of 9 three-pointers. Conklin added 14 points and 5 steals. Kim
Mardis (Cleveland, OH/East Tech) did not score and played just
nine minutes, but she had 6 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.
Edinboro finished the day shooting 37.1
percent, compared to 31.3 percent for Lock Haven. In the biggest
surprise, the Fighting Scots, ranked 13th in the PSAC in
rebounding margin, held a 53-39 advantage on the boards. In
addition, after turning the ball over 13 times in the first half,
they cut it to eight turnovers in the second half. |
