February 17, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University women’s basketball team moved a step closer to the PSAC Playoffs while severely dashing Lock Haven’s hopes with a 78-56 win over the Lady Eagles. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Fighting Scots as they improved to 13-11 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC West. Lock Haven is now 11-14 and 4-7, respectively.

Edinboro has little to enjoy the victory. The Fighting Scots will make up last Tuesday’s postponement at Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

The Fighting Scots trailed by as many as seven points in the first half before rallying for a 32-30 lead after twenty minutes. Edinboro closed with a 12-4 run, capped by Samatha Reimer’s (Altoona, PA/Altoona) three-pointer from 25-feet out in the final seconds. Reimer scored a total of six points in the run.

An 8-0 run early in the second half broke the game open. Kelsey Conklin (Edinboro, PA/ General McLane) started the run by making one of two free throws, then Reimer added a pair. The two teams then went scoreless for almost two minutes before a Reimer three made the score 44-34. Rae Sherred (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge Springs) ended the outburst with a pair of free throws. With 13:29 remaining, the Fighting Scots led 46-34. Lock Haven never pulled closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Four Fighting Scots scored in double digits, led by Reimer. Who came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points. The freshman guard made 3 of 5 three-pointers and went 10 of 12 from the free throw line. She added 7 rebounds.

Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) added 21 points to move into fifth place in career scoring with 1,386 points. She added a career-high 9 assists and went 3-for-3 from the line, giving her 402 career free throws made. That broke the school record of 400 previously held by Jessica Rowe.

Sherred registered her first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, making 3 of 9 three-pointers. Conklin added 14 points and 5 steals. Kim Mardis (Cleveland, OH/East Tech) did not score and played just nine minutes, but she had 6 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

Edinboro finished the day shooting 37.1 percent, compared to 31.3 percent for Lock Haven. In the biggest surprise, the Fighting Scots, ranked 13th in the PSAC in rebounding margin, held a 53-39 advantage on the boards. In addition, after turning the ball over 13 times in the first half, they cut it to eight turnovers in the second half.
