EDINBORO, PA In a makeup of a game
originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 13, but postponed due
to heavy snow, the Edinboro University womens basketball
team suffered a 73-65 loss at Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday. The
setback came one day after Edinboro defeated Lock Haven, 78-56, in
a key PSAC West contest.
The Fighting Scots fall to 13-12 on the season,
while Pitt-Johnstown picks up an important win in the region while
moving to 16-6.
Edinboro had posted wins in its last two trips
to the UPJ Sports Center, but the third time wasnt a charm.
The Fighting Scots were unable to overcome a huge disparity at the
free throw line, as they made just 10 of 13 free throws while the
Lady Cats were 25 of 30. Edinboro was called for 23 personal fouls
and UPJ just 10. Finally, one day after holding a huge rebounding
edge against Lock Haven, the Fighting Scots were outrebounded,
36-23.
The Fighting Scots trailed by just two at the
half, 28-26, but then saw a barrage of UPJ free throws in the
second half. The Lady Cats were 20 of 24 from the charity stripe
over the final twenty minutes, while the Boro was 6 of 9.
Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge)
paced the Fighting Scots with 30 points, two shy of her career
high. She made 12 of 21 field goals, including 3 of 8
three-pointers, and was 3 of 4 at the line. She became just the
fifth player in school history with 1,400 points, showing 1,416
points in just three seasons.
Freshmen Samantha Reimer (Altoona,
PA/Altoona) and Kelsey Conklin (Edinboro, PA/ General
McLane) were also in double digits with 14 and 10 points,
respectively. Conklin had a team-high 6 rebounds.
UPJ was led by Allison Krischer with 22 points
and Jessica Zapf, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday,
February 21, hosting Clarion in a 5:30 p.m. contest. The Fighting
Scots will celebrate Senior Day, and look to also clinch a PSAC
Playoff berth. |
