EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University mens
basketball team dropped a 73-59 decision at California(Pa.) on
Saturday night in the showdown for first place in the PSAC West.
The loss means Edinboro finishes second in the West and will host
Shippensburg on Tuesday night. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is 7
p.m. Cal, meanwhile, will host either Clarion or Lock Haven the
same evening.
Edinboro saw its four-game winning streak come
to an end. The Fighting Scots finish the regular season at 18-9
overall and 8-4 in the PSAC West. California(Pa.) is 22-5 and
10-2, respectively.
The first nine minutes of the game featured
five ties and seven lead changes. Cal took the lead for good at
17-15 with 10:53 remaining, and eventually built the lead to ten
points at 29-19 before settling for a 35-27 advantage at
intermission. Edinboro shot just 36.0 percent in the first half,
while cal was at 48.0 percent.
It got worse in the second half, as the Scots
managed just 32.3 percent from the floor, while the Vulcans made
54.2 percent of their field goal attempts. Cal opened the second
half with a 12-3 run to build a 47-30 lead with 15:38 left. The
Fighting Scots pulled to within 12 points twice before Cal used a
7-0 burst to take its biggest lead of the night at 58-39 with 8:44
remaining.
Back came the Scots, as they closed the margin
to ten points twice. The last time came with 4:18 showing on a
jumper by Joseph Jones (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) to make
it 61-51. Cal scored the next five points, however, to quell the
Boros comeback bid.
In a game which featured the top two rebounding
teams in the PSAC, Cal controlled the glass to the tune of 45-25.
Cal came in leading the PSAC in rebounding margin, while Edinboro
was second.
Devon Knight (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills)
continued his hot play with 17 points to lead the Fighting Scots.
Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) added 15
points, and Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) had
14 points and 8 rebounds. Tielsch moved into ninth place in career
rebounds with 715. Ryan McLemore (Cleveland, OH/St. Peter
Chanel), the PSACs second-leading rebounder, also had 8
rebounds before fouling out. He was one of two starters to foul
out, as Jones also exited early due to fouls. |
