EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens basketball team concluded the regular season with a
67-45 loss at California(Pa.) on Saturday evening. The Fighting
Scots suffered an extended dry spell in the second half that led
to the setback, as Cal outscored Edinboro 27-5 down the stretch.
With the loss, Edinboro falls to 14-13 overall
and 6-6 in the PSAC West. A victory would have given the Fighting
Scots second place in the Western Division. Instead, the Vulcans,
now 19-8 overall and 8-4 in league play, capture second place with
the Fighting Scots finishing fourth. Edinboro will play at
Indiana(Pa.), the Wests top seed, in a quarterfinal playoff
game on Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m.
The contest was even at 40-40 with exactly 11
minutes remaining after Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge)
made two free throws. Edinboros cold shooting spell had
already begun, however. Over the final 13 minutes, the Fighting
Scots made just one basket while going 1-for-18 from the floor. At
one points they missed 12 straight shots before Jen Boykin
(Erie, PA/Central) scored on a layup with 2:46 left.
By that time Cal had jumped to a 54-44 lead, at
one point running off eight straight points. Calderone made one of
two free throws with 2:30 left to close to 54-45, but the Vulcans
proceeded to score the final thirteen points of the game as the
Scots missed their final five shots.
In addition to the cold streak from the floor,
the Fighting Scots committed seven turnovers over the final 11
minutes. In all, they were guilty of 22 turnovers for the game.
Cal ended the game outscoring Edinboro off of turnovers, 28-14.
The first half was back and forth, with
Edinboro finally taking a 27-26 lead at the half. The Fighting
Scots shot 34.6 percent in the first half, compared to 34.4
percent for Cal. In the second half the Vulcans shot 55.2 percent,
while Edinboro made just 5 of 29 shots (17.2 percent). For the
game, the Scots finished at 25.5 percent, while Cal shot 44.3
percent. The Vulcans also held a 48-35 advantage on the glass.
Calderone and Kelsey Conklin (Edinboro,
PA/General McLane) were the lone Fighting Scots in double
figures. Calderone finished with 12 points, and Conklin had 10
points and a team-high 6 rebounds before fouling out. It was no
coincidence that the Scots trailed by just 46-42 with just over
five minutes to play when Conklin exited with her fifth foul.
