EDINBORO, PA – With a strong showing from the free throw line down the stretch the Edinboro University men’s basketball team advanced to the PSAC Semifinals with a 67-60 win over Shippensburg at McComb Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

The victory boosted Edinboro, the two-time defending PSAC champions, to 19-9 for the season, while Shippensburg’s season comes to an end at 17-14. Edinboro will face Millersville in the semifinals on Friday, March 2 at California(Pa.). The Marauders edged East Stroudsburg, 61-58, this evening. California(Pa.) earned the right to host the PSAC Final Four with a 67-62 win over Clarion. The Vulcans will face Cheyney, a 79-63 winner over Kutztown, in the other semifinal.

Edinboro entered the game ranked 12th in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 61.9 percent. The Fighting Scots ended the night making 23 of 30 free throws, including an 11-for-12 chart over the final two-and-a-half-minutes.

In a game which featured three ties and 13 lead changes, Shippensburg grabbed its final lead at 57-56 with 3:49 to play on a layup by Khalil Abdus-Salaam. Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/ Montour), who entered the game shooting just 48.2 percent from the line, made two free throws with 2:31 left to give Edinboro the lead for good at 58-57. That started the successful run at the free throw line as Edinboro scored its final 11 points at the line. The Fighting Scots did not make a field goal in the final four-and-a-half minutes.

Kyree Brown (Philadelphia, PA/Friends Central) made one of two free throws to give Edinboro a 59-57 lead. Over the next minute-and-a-half the Red Raiders would go just 1-for-4 from the line, missing the front end of three one-and-ones. The Fighting Scots built the lead to 63-58 with 38 seconds left as Tielsch made two more free throws, followed by a pair by Ryan McLemore (Cleveland, OH/St. Peter Chanel).

Jamal Williams broke the string for Shippensburg with two free throws with 29 seconds to play, and the Red Raiders had a chance to tie the game when Edinboro turned the ball over with 24 ticks left. Chuck Davis misfired on a three-pointer with 18 seconds to play, with Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) grabbing the rebound and immediately getting fouled.

The senior guard, Edinboro’s leading scorer on the evening with 21 points, calmly sank both free throws for a 65-60 lead. Shippensburg missed another three and McLemore salted the game away with two freebies.

The rematch of last year’s PSAC title game started out in favor of the Red Raiders, as Shippensburg jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the contest. Edinboro grabbed its first lead of the game at 15-14 on a Tielsch three-pointer, his second trifecta of the season. The Scots went up by as many as five points in the half before settling for a 30-29 lead at intermission. The lead came despite shooting just 25.0 percent from the floor in the first half.

The Scots ended the night at 33.9 percent from the floor while Shippensburg shot 38.5 percent. Edinboro held a 41-33 lead on the glass and committed just nine turnovers. The Red Raiders were guilty of 13 turnovers.

Ingram made 7 of 14 field goals, including 3 of 4 three’s, and was 4-for-4 at the line for his 21 points. It marked his 11th straight game in double digits. He added 7 rebounds. Tielsch was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures with 18 points, adding 11 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season. The 6’8” senior moved into ninth place in career scoring with 1,354 points.

The 19th win gives Edinboro 64 wins over the last three years. That ties the record for wins in a three-year period. The 1973-76 teams also won 64 games in a three-year period.
