Official Press Release

Fighting Scots Drop 81-58 Decision at IUP in PSAC Women's Basketball Quarterfinals
February 27, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – For a half it looked as if the Edinboro University women’s basketball team had a chance to upset Indiana(Pa.), the top seed in the PSAC West. But the Indians exploded for 59 points in the second half to defeat the visiting Fighting Scots in the PSAC Quarterfinal game, 81-58.

The loss ends Edinboro’s season at 14-14. IUP advances to the semifinals. The Crimson Hawks will play Millersville, a 57-54 winner over West Chester. East Stroudsburg earned the right to host the PSAC Final Four with a 66-45 win over Mansfield, and will oppose California(Pa.) in the other semifinal. The Vulcans were a 79-65 winner over Shippensburg this evening.

Edinboro led by as many as eight points in the first half on two occasions, the last at 14-6. IUP would go ahead briefly at 19-16, but the Fighting Scots responded with seven straight points for a 23-19 advantage with 1:28 remaining. Kelsey Conklin (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) started the run with a jumper, followed by a Rachel Johnson (Oreland, OH/Springfield) layup. Conklin then made three out of four free throws.

The Fighting Scots would lead by 23-22 at the half, holding IUP to just 22.9 percent from the floor (8 of 35). The Fighting Scots shot 32.1 percent in the first twenty minutes and committed 11 turnovers, but held a 26-22 rebounding edge as Conklin pulled down nine boards.

The second half was a different story, however. The Crimson Hawks shot a sizzling 68.6 percent from the floor, making 24 of 35 shots. After IUP took the lead at 24-23 on a jumper by Jahzinga Tracey, Rae Sherred (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge Springs) made one of two free throws for a 24-24 tie. IUP proceeded to go on an 18-6 run to build the lead to 42-30 with 14:17 remaining. A 13-3 burst made it 55-35 with just over nine minutes remaining, and the Scots never pulled closer than 18 points the rest of the way.

Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) led the Boro with 17 points, as the senior guard concluded her career with 1,460 points. That’s good for fourth all-time, in just three seasons. Calderone also went 5-for-6 from the line, giving her a school-record 153 free throws made on the season. That breaks the old mark of 152 set by Lachelle Crawl in 2002-03.

Johnson was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures, making 7 of 9 field goals to finish with 14 points. Conklin got into foul trouble in the second half and ended the night with 9 points and 10 rebounds.
