EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
softball team swept a pair of games on Wednesday to improve to
5-3. The Fighting Scots are playing in the Gene Cusic Classic in
Ft. Myers, FL. After a slow start, the Boro bats have come alive
recently. Edinboro pounded out 25 hits while defeating St. Thomas
Aquinas, 12-6, and Bridgeport, 5-2. The wins snapped a three-game
losing streak.
In the opener, Edinboro opened an 8-1 lead
after three innings, pushing across three runs in the first, four
more in the second, and a single run in the third. The Fighting
Scots added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth while
totaling 15 hits.
Katelyn Gurgiolo and Danielle Arno led the hit
parade with three hits apiece. Gurgiolo was 3-for-3 and scored
three times. Arno went 3-for-4 and hit her third home run of the
trip while driving in two runs. Leanne Carmichael was 2-for-4 with
3 RRBIs, Alicia Gordon was 2-for-3 with a solo homer, Mandie
Iorfido drove in a run while going 2-for-5, and Dana Webb had two
hits in four at bits.
Chelsie Bosak pitched the first five innings,
giving up nine hits and three earned runs while striking out two.
Kim Kuchev finished up. In two innings, she gave up three hits and
an unearned run with a walk and two strikeouts.
In the second game, Edinboro bested Bridgeport,
5-2, behind a strong pitching performance from Jessica Lindamood.
The senior tossed all seven hits, scattering six hits, with three
walks and four strikeouts.
Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead with a run in the
third, but Edinboro tied the game in the fourth inning as Vanessa
Rose stroked a one-out single, moved to second on a flyout, and
scored on Iorfidos two-out single. The Fighting Scots added
three runs in the fifth as Ashleigh Smith pounded a three-run
homer. Rose added an RBI single later in the frame. She ended the
day 3-for-4.
Edinboro is back in action on Thursday with a
pair of contests. At 9 a.m. the Scots play St. Michaels,
followed by an 11 a.m. contest against C.W. Post.
