Softball Team Upsets C.W. Post, Loses in Extra Innings to St. Michael’s
Rose Tosses Gem vs. Pioneers
March 15, 2007

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University softball team split a pair of games on Thursday while competing in the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, FL. The Fighting Scots upset nationally-ranked C.W. Post, 3-0, behind Vanessa Rose’s three-hitter, then suffered a 3-2 loss in eight innings to St. Michael’s.

C.W. Post’s trip down south has been difficult, and the Fighting Scots didn’t make it any easier as they shut out the Pioneers. C.W. Post fell to 0-4. Rose gave up just three singles, did not walk a batter, and struck out 10.

The junior right hander got all the support she needed in the fourth inning as the Fighting Scots pushed across all three runs. Dana Webb led off the inning with a single, then Mandy Iorfido reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Leanne Carmichael’s single loaded the bases with one out, and Alicia Gordon followed with an RBI single. Jessica Lindamood capped the inning with a two-run double.

Edinboro was unable to make it four straight wins as the Fighting Scots dropped a tough extra-inning affair to St. Michael’s The eighth inning began with a 1-1 tie. Using the international tiebreaker, St. Michael’s began the top of the eighth with a runner on second. A single put runners on first and third, and with two outs a dropped line drive down the right field line scored both two runners.

Katelyn Gurgiolo started the bottom of the eighth on second base, and scored on Iorfido’s two-out single. Danielle Arno flew out to left to end the game.

Kim Kurchev was the hard-luck loser. The senior scattered nine hits while going the distance, with two walks and two strikeouts. She gave up just one earned run. Gurgiolo was 2-for-3, as was Carmichael. Carmichael’s fourth inning double drove in Iorfido, who was 2-for-4 with a double in the fourth.

Edinboro is now 6-4, while St. Michael’s improved to 6-2. The Fighting Scots conclude their spring trip with a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at Florida Gulf Coast.
