Alex Clemsen Places Fourth At Nationals

Deonte Penn Wins By Fall At Nationals To Cap Career

Alex Clemsen Places Fourth At Nationals
Senior Finishes Career in Ninth Place in Career Wins With 121
AUBURN HILLS, MI – Edinboro University senior Alex Clemsen (Moberly, MO/Moberly) finished fourth at the 2007 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships. The Nationals are taking place at The Palace at Auburns Hills in Auburn, MI, and concluded today.

Clemsen suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to Minnesota’s Roger Kish in the third place match at 184 lbs. Kish came into the tournament ranked second, while Clemsen was seventh. It marked the second meeting between the two. They met in Friday morning’s quarterfinals, with Kish prevailing 9-5.

Unlike that match, in which Kish recorded three takedowns and Clemsen one, this one was a defensive struggle with Clemsen carrying much of the action but unable to register a takedown. Kish recorded the lone takedown on a single leg with 1:04 left in the first period. Clemsen escaped at the 47-second mark to make it 2-1 after one period. It was tied after a Clemsen escape to start the second period, but the deciding point came on a Kish escape 16 seconds into the final period.

Clemsen reached the third place match with a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Michigan’s Tyrel Todd, the fourth seed. The difference was a takedown by Clemsen with 40 seconds left in the match. He spun tied up Todd on a single leg attempt, the took down the Wolverine for the winning points. Todd would close to 3-2 with an escape with 20 seconds remaining.

Neither wrestler scored in the first period. Clemsen opened the second period in the down position and nine seconds later was on his feet for a point. That would remain the only scoring until Todd opened the third period with an escape at the 1:50 mark, setting the stage for Clemsen’s winning takedown.

Clemsen concludes an outstanding career in which he was a four-time national qualifier with a career record of 121-35, good for ninth place in career wins. He earned All-American honors for the first time this season.

Deonte Penn Wins By Fall At Nationals To Cap Career
Senior Finishes Seventh at 165 lbs.
AUBURN HILLS, MI – Edinboro University senior Deonte Penn (Solon, OH/Solon) concluded his career with his trademark, a win by fall, to finish seventh at 165 lbs. at the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships. The Nationals were held at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, MI, and concluded today.

Penn, the seventh seed, faced Mike Miller of Central Michigan in the seventh place match. He picked up his 20th fall of the season, and 53rd of his career, both school records, when he put Miller on his back for the fall at 4:55. Penn had actually won eight straight matches by fall entering Nationals, but this was his first pin at this year’s Nationals.

Penn opened the scoring with a takedown at the 2:15 mark, but then gave up his fourth reversal of the tourney with 20 seconds left. He got the escape before the period ended for a 3-2 lead. Penn started down to begin the second period, and was able to reverse Miller just before the winning fall in a typical Penn wild scramble.

With the victory, Penn caps an outstanding career as a two-time All-American. In addition to this year’s seventh-place showing, he was fourth a year ago. He ended this season with a 37-4 record and a school-record 20 falls. For his career, he finishes 12th in career wins with a 114-43 career record. In addition, he owns the career record for falls with 53.
