EDINBORO, PA The 30th Annual National
Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament began today,
March 22, at Edinboro University. Edinboro earned a 53-47 victory
over the University of Arizona, and will reach the semifinals of
the tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Leading the way
for Edinboro was Mike Looney (19), Bryce Doody (11), and freshman
Andrew Grossmann (7).
Bryce Doody opened up the scoring for the
Fighting Scots with a quick lay-up and foul shot. But Edinboro
would be a little frustrated from then on. Edinboro was held to
just 39.3% from the field in the first half.
We played fine. We just played a
little flat, says senior Mike Looney, who led all scorers
with 19 points.
The Fighting Scots would only find themselves
up 25-24 at end of the 1st half.
Arizona played a very smart
basketball game and controlled much of the tempo, Coach Jim
Glatch added.
A 10-4 run by Edinboro to open up the second,
helped the Fighting Scot pull away.
The three freshmen picked-up the
slack and the defensive intensively was much better in the second
half, Coach Glatch talking about the run.
Edinboro held a 10 point led for much of the
second half but only won by 6 because of some missed foul shots
down the stretch.
We need to play a lot better to
beat Illinois tomorrow, says Glatch.
Leading scorers for University of Arizona were
Brendan Downes (17) and Ryan Stevens (15).
Edinboro continues their run at the
championship tomorrow March 23rd at McComb Fieldhouse. Game time
is scheduled for 8:30 against 2nd ranked University of Illinois. |
