EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
softball team lost a pair of games at Walsh on Wednesday. The
Fighting Scots fall to 7-9 with the two losses. The first setback
was a heartbreaker, as the Fighting Scots gave up two runs with
two outs in the bottom of the eighth for a 2-1 defeat. In the
nightcap, Walsh pounded out 19 hits to prevail, 17-2.
Vanessa Rose was the hard-luck loser for
Edinboro in the opener, falling to 2-3. The junior gave up nine
hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out three while not allowing a
walk. After the two teams battled for seven scoreless innings, the
Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth. Katelyn
Gurgiolo opened the inning with a single. She was sacrificed to
second, then scored when Dana Webbs fly ball was dropped for
an error.
Rose quickly got two outs to start the bottom
of the eighth, but a single kept the Cavs hopes alive. Kelly
Jackson followed with a double to tie the game at 1-1, and Ashley
Whitts single drove in Jackson with the game-winning run.
After managing just three hits in the first
game, the Fighting Scots totaled five safeties in the second
contest, which went just 4 ½ innings. Walsh scored five runs
in the first inning, four in the second, three in the third, and
five more in the fourth while finishing with 19 hits.
Edinboros lone runs came in the second
inning. Danielle Arno walked, and after a sacrifice, she scored on
Jessica Lindamoods single. Lindamood would come around to
score on Alicia Gordons base hit.
Edinboro returns to action on Friday, March 30,
hosting Slippery Rock in the PSAC West opener for both teams. The
doubleheader gets underway at 2 p.m.
