Game 1
Game 2
EDINBORO, PA The visiting Edinboro
University softball team came within an inning of sweeping
California(Pa.) in a PSAC West doubleheader on Saturday. As it
was, the Fighting Scots earned a split with one of the perennial
powers in the PSAC West, thanks to the pitching of Vanessa Rose.
Edinboro edged the Vulcans, 1-0, in the first game, before
suffering a 6-1 loss in the nightcap.
Edinboro is now 10-10 overall and off to a 3-1
start in PSAC West action. California(Pa.) is 4-10 and 1-3,
respectively.
On Friday Rose hurled a pair of shutouts
against Slippery Rock. She came back to extend her scoreless
innings streak to 24 before California(Pa.) put all six of its
runs up in the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game.
In the opener, Rose gave up just three hits
along with a walk while striking out three. She did not allow a
runner to reach third until the bottom of the seventh inning when
she had to pitch out of a second-and-third situation with two
outs. She induced Julia Mueller to ground out to short for the
final out.
Edinboro scored the only run it would need when
Danielle Arno hit her fifth home run of the season to lead off the
fifth inning. The Fighting Scots managed just three safeties, as
Rose and Mandie Iorfido had singles.
In the nightcap, the Fighting Scots again
managed just three hits. They took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first inning as Dana Webb reached first on an error with two outs
and scored on Iorfidos double.
The score would remain that way until the
bottom of the sixth inning when the Vulcans bunched together five
hits to score six runs. Julie Mackenzies bases loaded double
drove in three runs, and with two outs Renee Gmiter smacked a
three-run homer.
Rose would end the game allowing nine hits and
striking out five without giving up a walk. The junior is now 6-5.
Edinboro is back in action on Tuesday, April 3,
hosting Gannon in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for
