EDINBORO, PA Edinboro University pitcher
Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester) has been named the PSAC
West Softball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 22.
This marks the second time this season that Rose has won the
award.
The junior left hander had a busy week, as she
threw in seven of Edinboros eight games, starting six of
those contests. For the week she was 4-2 with a 1.50 ERA, although
that is a bit deceiving. She gave up runs in just four of the 42
innings she pitched. All told, she allowed nine earned runs and 31
hits, walking four and striking out 53.
Roses biggest win of the week was also
one of the biggest in Edinboro softball history. She hurled the
Fighting Scots to a 1-0 win over top-ranked and defending national
champion Lock Haven, snapping the Lady Eagles 32-game
winning streak. She gave up just three hits, two of them infield
singles, with no walks and 13 strikeouts, tying her career high.
That was one of four shutouts on the week. She
began with a four-hitter against Clarion in an 8-0 win, then later
tossed a 1-0 hitter against the Golden Eagles, missing a perfect
game by a single in the sixth. In her final outing of the week she
three a two-hitter to shutout Indiana(Pa.), 3-0. She issued two
walks and struck out nine in that game.
On the season, Rose has a deceiving 10-12
record, with a 2.16 ERA. Shes tossed eight shutouts, the
second-highest in school history. In 142 2/3 innings, shes
allowed 122 hits and a mere 17 walks, with 166 strikeouts. The
strikeouts are tied for second all-time, 23 shy of the record of
189 held by Kathy Mazur. In addition, the 142 2/3 innings is tied
for fourth. She needs 15 1/3 innings to break the record of 157
2/3 set by Brianne Taylor in 2001.
Career-wise, Rose is third in career strikeouts
(369), 20 shy of moving into second place. She stands fourth in
career innings pitched with 351 1/3.
Edinboro is currently 16-18, but more
importantly, 9-7 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots are back in
action on Friday, April 27, hosting California(Pa.), then conclude
PSAC West action on Saturday, April 28 at Indiana(Pa.). Edinboro
is currently tied for second in the PSAC West, with the top three
teams advancing to the PSAC Tournament on May 3-5. The Scots seek
their first PSAC playoff berth since 1990.
