Official Press Release

Fighting Scots Sweep IUP to Reach PSAC Softball Playoffs for First Time Since 1990
April 30, 2007

Complete Box Scores »»  Game 1    Game 2

EDINBORO, PA – 1990. That’s the last time the Edinboro women’s softball team had qualified for the PSAC Tournament. That was, until Monday afternoon, when Vanessa Rose tossed a three-hit shutout, her ninth shutout of the season, to lead the Fighting Scots to a 3-0 win at Indiana(Pa.) in the first game of a doubleheader.

The victory eliminated IUP and gave Edinboro the third berth out of the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots went on to sweep the Crimson Hawks thanks to a 10-1 win in five innings in the nightcap. Rose picked up the win in the second game, as well.

Edinboro is now 18-18 overall and 11-7 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots are tied for second place in the Western Division with California(Pa.). The Vulcans visit Edinboro on Tuesday to conclude the regular season. The Fighting Scots must win one of the two contests to finish as the second seed out of the West. Kutztown will host the PSAC Tournament on May 3-5. The 18 wins are the most since the 2000 team finished 21-15.

“We’re very excited,” noted elated head coach Dan Gierlak afterwards. “I’m very proud of this team. They’ve worked extremely hard since the fall, and really deserve this. I want them to enjoy this moment, but we have to remember we’ve got an important doubleheader on Tuesday.”

Edinboro broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Rose singled up the middle with one out and Dana Webb followed her second home run, a two-run shot to left field. The Fighting Scots added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Ashleigh Smith doubled with one out, moved to third on a sacrifice, and scored on a wild pitch.

Rose gave up three singles and did not walk a batter while striking out seven. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate as Edinboro totaled six hits.

The Scots pounded out 11 hits in the nightcap, while Rose again gave up just three hits. She didn’t allow a walk and struck out four.

Webb paced the offense with three hits in four at bats, driving in five runs. She hit a two-run homer to centerfield in the first inning, had an RBI single in the second, then drove in two runs with a single in the fifth. The sophomore now has 27 RBIs, the fifth-highest season total. Katelyn Gurgiolo went 2-for-2, Rose was 2-for-3m, and Mandie Iorfido was 2-for-4.

Rose continues to challenge numerous season and career records. The junior has 12 wins, tied for the fourth-highest season total. In addition, she has tossed 154 2/3 innings, just three innings shy of Brianne taylor’s record of 157 2/3 set in 2001, and with 177 strikeouts she needs 13 strikeouts to break the season record of 189 set by Kelly Mazur in 1986. She has 20 complete games, one shy of the school record, and her nine shutouts ranks seconds.

Among the career records, she has moved into third place in career wins with 27, and she is also third in career strikeouts with 380, needing nine more to move into second place.
