EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
softball team clinched the second seed out of the Western Division
in the PSAC Softball Tournament with a rain-shortened 3-1 win over
visiting California(Pa.) on Tuesday. The contest was halted with
two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning due to lightning, and
after an hour delay, continued lightning and rain halted the
action and forced postponement of the second game.
The Fighting Scots entered Tuesdays
doubleheader needing one win over the Vulcans to clinch the second
seed. Edinboro is now 19-18 overall and finishes PSAC West play at
12-7. It marks the most wins since the 200 campaign.
California(Pa.) is now 14-15 overall and 11-8 in the West.
Edinboro will make its first appearance in the
PSAC Tournament since 1990 on Thursday, May 3, when it faces East
Stroudsburg, the third seed out of the Eastern Division, at 12
noon. California(Pa.), the Wests third seed, meets East
number two seed Bloomsburg at 10 a.m. Kutztown will host the
tournament, which runs from May 3-5.
Vanessa Rose picked up her 13th win of the
season as she scattered five hits and walked one. The junior
struck out six, giving her 183 for the season. She is seven
strikeouts shy of breaking the season record of 189 set by Kathy
Mazur in 1986. In addition, Rose broke the record for innings
pitched in a season today, now with 160 2/3. Rose gave up one
unearned run to lower her ERA to 1.96, and with a 13-12 record,
she is now tied for third for wins in a season.
Danielle Arno also got into the record-setting
act, as the sophomore third baseman hit a solo home to right
center to lead off the second inning. Her seventh homer of the
season not only gave Edinboro a 1-0 lead, but broke the school
record for home runs in a season.
She pushed across two more runs with a double
to left center in the third inning to give the Scots a 3-0 lead.
Cal scored its lone run in the fourth inning when Julie Kackenzie
scored on a passed ball.
Arno had two hits in two at bats, while Mandi
Iorfido was 2-for-2 for the Scots.
