EDINBORO, PA The Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference announced the All-PSAC softball teams this
afternoon. Three Edinboro players were named to the All-PSAC West
squad. Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester) was named to
the first team, while Dana Webb (Amherst, NY/Williamsville
South) and Mandie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) were
accorded second team honors.
Edinboro is currently 19-20 and is one of eight
teams participating in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional
at Kutztown. The regional begins today with the Fighting Scots,
seeded seventh, opposing the host Golden Bears, the second seed. A
week ago Edinboro competed in the PSAC Tournament for the first
time since 1990.
Lock Haven, the top seed in the region and the
PSAC champion, dominated the awards, and had a total of eight
players on the All-PSAC teams. Ilia Lopez was named the Player of
the Year, Kristin Erb was the Pitcher of the Year, and Kelley
Green was voted the Coach of the Year.
Rose has enjoyed an outstanding campaign
despite a deceiving 13-14 record. The junior lefthander has
pitched in virtually every game down the stretch. She has a 1.97
ERA and has recorded nine shutouts, the second-highest total in
school history. In 174.0 innings she has allowed 151 hits and 19
walks while striking out 197.
The 13 wins is tied for third in the season
records, and she has broken the school record for innings pitched.
In addition, Rose broke the season record for strikeouts in a
season at the PSAC Tournament. Among Roses nine shutouts a
1-0 win over defending national champion Lock Haven, who was
ranked number one at the time. While handing LHU one of just two
losses this season, she allowed just three hits and matched her
career high with 13 strikeouts.
Rose is also climbing many of the career record
charts, ranking third in career wins (28), third in career innings
pitched (382 2/3) and second in career strikeouts (400).
Webb is one of five sophomores in the starting
lineup. After hitting .333 as a freshman, the second baseman
boosted her average to a team-leading .359 this season. She also
leads the team with eight doubles and three triples, and is tied
for second in home runs with three. She has a team-high 24 RBIs,
tied for fifth in the season records, and her 42 hits is also tied
for fifth in a season. She ranks seventh in career RBIs (42). Webb
was hitting .460 over her last 14 games (23 of 50), including a
3-for-4 effort with 5 RBIs in the recent 10-1 win over IUP, before
going 0-for-7 at the PSAC Tournament. She is also exceptional in
the field, with just three errors for a .981 fielding percentage.
Iorfido was named the second team catcher for
the second straight year. The juniors average of .274 is
down from her previous two years when she hit .377 as a freshman
and .343 as a sophomore, but she is a clutch hitter who has also
done an outstanding job behind the plate.
While starting all 39 games, she has driven in
15 runs, good for fourth on the team. She had hit in nine of her
previous 12 games before the PSAC Tournament, and had four hits in
her last six at bats before going 0-for-7 at the PSACs. |
