Edinboro Suffers 1-0 Loss in Eight Innings to Bloomsburg at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Softball Regional
Fighting Scots Go Down in Second Round
May 11, 2007

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA -- The Edinboro University softball team suffered a 1-0 loss in eight innings to 19th-ranked Bloomsburg on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional at Kutztown University.

The loss dropped the Fighting Scots (20-21) into the losers bracket of the regional, where they will meet Shippensburg on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The loser will be eliminated.

For the second straight day the seventh-seeded Fighting Scots battled a high seed, but once again the bats failed to come alive. After managing just two hits in a 2-0 win over second seed Kutztown on Thursday, they were held to four hits by the third-seeded Huskies and Ashley Lynn.

Lynn and Vanessa Rose settled into a pitchers duel, as neither team scored through seven innings. But in the eighth inning Bloomsburg finally broke through. Nikki Shiko opened the inning with a single. After a popout, Tara Reed drove Shiko home with a double to left center.

Edinboro threatened in the bottom of the eighth when Katelyn Gurgiolo singled with one out and moved to second on an error. Lynn struck out Rose, and Dana Webb ended the game with a groundout to second base.

Besides the eighth inning, neither team was able to get runners into scoring position. Bloomsburg left runners on first and third in the first inning, but Rose then proceeded to retire 16 straight batters before giving up her lone walk to start the seventh inning. A stolen base left the Huskies with a runner on second, but Rose stranded the runner there.

Edinboro threatened in the sixth when Rose doubled with one out, but that was as close as she would get to scoring.

Rose (14-15) tossed a five-hitter while suffering the tough loss. The junior struck out eight. Lynn gave up four hits and struck out six to improve to 22-5. Gurgiolo had two of Edinboro's four hits, with Rose and Jessica Lindamood accounting for the other two.
