Official Press Release

Edinboro Eliminates Shippensburg With 2-1 Win at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Softball Regional
Rose Strikes Out 12, Carmichael Hits Solo Homer
May 12, 2007

Complete Box Score

Thanks to timely hitting and the continued strong pitching of Vanessa Rose, the Edinboro softball team remained alive in the NCXAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional at Kutztown, PA. The Fighting Scots defeated Shippensburg, 2-1, to improve to 21-21 while dropping Shippensburg to 30-24 and eliminating the Lady Raiders.

Rose hooked up in a pitcher's duel with Ship's Dani Shields. The junior lefthander stranded runners on first and second in the first inning, and proceeded to record 14 straight outs before a Shippensburg single in the sixth inning.

Edinboro, meanwhile, did not come up with its first hit until two outs in the fifth inning when Leanne Carmichael's single broke up Shields' no-hit bid.

The Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning when Katelyn Gurgiolo singled with two outs, stole second, and scored on Rose's RBI single. Carmichael boosted the lead to 2-0 with a solo homer to left field with two outs in the seventh inning, her fourth home run of the season.

The extra run came in handy, as Shippensburg's bats came alive in the bottom of the frame. Nicole Henninger led off the inning with a double, and Lisamarie Ramagli followed with a run-scoring single. Ramagli moved up to second on a sacrifice, but Rose ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts.

Rose improved her record to 15-15 with a five-hitter. She did not permit a walk and struck out 12, one shy of her career high. Shields gave up just four hits and had seven strikeouts. Carmichael had two hits in three at bats.

"We just keep making adjustments to what the pitchers are throwing," noted head coach Dan Gierlak. "It's been fun."

Edinboro now advances to play East Stroudsburg at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the winner advancing to Sunday's action and the loser being eliminated.
