EDINBORO, PA -- The Edinboro University
softball team saw its magical run in its first-ever trip NCAA
Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional come to an end on Sunday morning
thanks to a 4-2 loss to East Stroudsburg. The contest was
originally scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start on Saturday, but severe
weather delayed the first pitch by over two hours.
The two teams were able to get three innings in
on Saturday before the contest was suspended due to darkness.
Unfortunately for the Fighting Scots, those three innings proved
their undoing. After Dana Webb gave Edinboro a 1-0 lead with a
solo home run to right field, her fifth of the season, ESU
answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Vanessa
Rose retired the first two batters, but three straight singles,
the last by Candice Pastor, plated the tying run.
East Stroudsburg jumped ahead 3-1 in the second
inning thanks to a two-run double by Jess Schmoyer. Schmoyer
accounted for the Warriors' final run with a home run to center
field in the fifth inning.
Ashleigh Smith gave the Boro hope in the top of
the seventh as led off the inning with a home run to cut the gap
to 4-2. But a line drive and two fly outs ended Edinboro's season
at 21-22.
The Fighting Scots came in as the number seven
seed and knocked off second-seeded and 14th-ranked Kutztown in
their first game, 2-0. After a 1-0 loss in eight innings to
19th-ranked Bloomsburg, the second seed, Edinboro remained alive
on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Shippensburg, the fifth seed.
Rose was brilliant throughout the tournament
for the Fighting Scots. The junior ends the year with a 15-16
record after allowing seven hits while striking out eight. In 28
innings overall, she allowed 22 hits and 4 walks while striking
out 37.
The Boro bats struggled most of the time, but
they came alive in the final game with 10 hits. However, similar
of the Scots struggles in a 1-0 loss to East Stroudsburg in the
PSAC Tournament, they left seven runners on base. That included
runners on second and third in the second inning, first and second
in the third, and third in the sixth inning.
I'm disappointed for the girls,
related head coach Dan Gierlak, but overall Im pleased
with what we accomplished. I think we came here and proved we can
play with anybody. A clutch hit here or there and we might still
be playing. I'm very proud of this team, and happy that our three
seniors got to experience postseason play. I think now that we've
gotten a taste of this, we'll be even better next year.
East Stroudsburg (29-27) moves on to play
Bloomsburg at 12 noon. The winner meets Lock Haven at 2:30 p.m. |
