Edinboro Announces 2007-08 Men’s Basketball Schedule
Slate Features 13 Home Games, Stretch of Eight Straight Games on the Road
June 17, 2007

Complete 2007-08 Schedule (PDF)

EDINBORO, PA – The 2007-08 Edinboro University men’s basketball schedule will feature 13 home games, along with an appearance in Gannon’s Porreco Cup. The Fighting Scots will open their 19th season under head coach Greg Walcavich on Thursday, November 15, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan in a 7:00 p.m. tipoff. Edinboro finished with a 19-10 record a year ago.

Edinboro begins the season with three straight games in McComb Fieldhouse, but then faces an arduous string of road games. Following the West Virginia Wesleyan game, the Fighting Scots host Penn State New Kensington on Saturday, November 17, then entertain Allegheny on Wednesday, November 28. That will mark the first time the two local outfits have met since the 2001-02 season.

The Fighting Scots find themselves on the road the entire month of December, a span of eight games, before returning home to McComb Fieldhouse for three straight games. The road trip begins with a pair of PSAC crossover games at Millersville and West Chester on December 1 and 2. Millersville finished the season with a 28-5 record and won the PSAC championship. The Marauders dethroned the two-time defending champions Fighting Scots in the semifinals, 65-55. They went on to lose to eventual national champion Barton in the NCAA East Regional title game.

Following the trip east, Edinboro will play face another pair of local rivals in Gannon and Mercyhurst on December 5 and December 8, respectively. The Lakers were 18-11 a year ago, while the Golden Knights were an uncharacteristic 9-17, but are always tough at the Hammermill Center.

After facing a pair of PSAC East powers in East Stroudsburg (18-10) and Kutztown (17-11) on December 18 and 19, the Fighting Scots will find themselves back in the Hammermill Center as part of the field for the Porreco Cup. It marks Edinboro’s first appearance in the holiday tournament since the 2002-03 campaign. The Fighting Scots have a tough opening draw, opposing Bowie State in the 6:00 p.m. lidlifter on December 28. The Bulldogs were 19-10 a year ago. Gannon and Seton Hill will meet in the other first round game.

“That stretch of eight games could really set the tone for the season,” related Walcavich. “It’s never enjoyable to spend an entire month on the road, but that’s how the schedule falls. It’s not the first time we’ve faced something like this. It will definitely challenge us and get us ready for divisional play.”

January begins with home games against Cheyney (January 5), Mansfield (January 12) and Bloomsburg (January 13). The Fighting Scots then begin PSAC West action on Wednesday, January 16 at Slippery Rock. The remainder of the schedule finds the Boro not playing more than two games in a row at home or on the road. The 2007-08 schedule concludes on Saturday, March 1 as the Fighting Scots host California(Pa.). The Vulcans were 24-7 a year ago and made the NCAA Playoffs.

“All in all I think it’s a challenging schedule,” noted Walcavich. “With losing Daren Tielsch and Curtis Ingram, we’ll need some people to step up early. Hopefully the first three home games will give us a chance to develop some depth before we spend December on the highways.”
