Indiana, Pa. Brittany Pikur got IUP off
to a fast start in the opening half but the Crimson Hawks could
not find the net again as Edinboro rallied for a 2-1 victory in a
PSAC West women's soccer contest Wednesday at the South Campus
Field.
IUP (1-1, 0-1 PSAC West), ranked 15th in the
National Soccer Coaches Association poll, had won seven in a row
over the Fighting Scots, and the defeat was just the second in 16
home games against PSAC West competition for the Crimson Hawks
since the conference went to division play in 2004.
Pikur scored her first goal of the season off
an assist by Kim Kowalski just 4:37 into the game to give IUP a
1-0 lead. The lead held up until Angie de Almeida scored twice in
the second half for Edinboro (1-0-1, 1-0 PSAC West).
de Almeida tied it with 6:57 gone after
intermission, assisted by Elise Falatach. With 13:38 remaining in
the game, de Almeida beat IUP goalie April Hunsberger for the
second time, with the assist credited to Ashley Pulman.
In a defensive-minded game, both teams had 11
shots on goal, with Hunsberger making three saves and Samantha
Cairns stopping four shots for the Fighting Scots. IUP held an 8-4
edge in corner kicks.
IUP is on the road for games at East
Stroudsburg on Saturday and Lock Haven on Monday before returning
home for a September 6 contest against Clarion beginning at 4 p.m.
