ADVANCED JEWELRY OR
METALSMITHING

A series of advanced jewelry or metalsmithing expe-
riences explored in this course allow the student to
selectively study a variety of metalworking tech-
niques such as: respousse, etching, engraving, forg-
ing, die assisted forming, fabrication, metal spinning,
centrifugal casting, gravity casting, inlay toolmaking,
tempering, angle raising, air raising, necking, Dutch
raising, granulation, nello photo etching, plating, etc.
Also limited production of metal objects utilizing
industrial reproduction techniques. Prerequisite:
ART211 and ART319 or permission of the instructor.

METAL ENAMELING
WORKSHOP
3 sem. hrs.
This is a workshop exploring the use of vitreous
enamels as a supplemental surface treatment in met-
alwork. Primary emphasis will be placed on historical
techniques: i.e., champleve, plique-a-jour, and cloi-
sonne. Prerequisite: ART211 or permission of the
instructor.

STAINED GLASS WORKSHOP

An elective course in stained glass design and con-
struction stressing contemporary methods, as well as
traditional and experimental approaches. Course
work will include Tiffany and Came construction
techniques and experimental uses of sandblasting,

This course extends the study of color introduced in
ART101. Various color systems in use since the
Renaissance are studied, with studio problems
assigned to allow exploration of color dynamics,

WATERCOLOR I

First course in aqueous media. Emphasis will be on
transparent watercolor techniques and qualities with
intent to create strong visual statements using the
assets of watercolor while surmounting some of its
limitations.

In this course, the student is encouraged to draw upon
the instructor and other artists and their art in formu-

ART508.42 ART WORKSHOP ­
PAINTING
OF THE COASTAL AREA
3 sem. hrs.
This workshop is to be an intensive involvement with
the aesthetic qualities of the seashore and its environ.
Paintings using various media (watercolor, oils,
acrylic) according to personal preference will be cre-
ated. Slides and other reproductions of relevant paint-
ings by artists of historical importance will also be
examined and discussed. Students will be expected to
bring their own painting materials. Students without
materials or who have specific questions about mate-

PHOTOGRAPHY I

Students learn the creative process of photography
through exposure to the concepts and techniques nec-
essary to produce black and white negatives and
prints. Students also learn to understand the formal
and conceptual structures of photographs and to
expose, develop, print, alter and finish their photo-
graphs. The course requires access to a manually
operated camera.

PHOTOGRAPHY II

This course continues students' exploration of the cre-
ative process through black and white photography. It
covers archival-quality printing and precise control of
negative development and explores multiple image
techniques such as sequencing and montage.

INTERMEDIATE
PHOTOGRAPHY I

Students will learn the basics of color photography.
They will print from color negatives and shoot color
negatives and transparencies. Students will learn the
basics of digital photography. They will use single
lens reflex digital cameras, scan negatives and trans-
parencies, select and adjust images, save images and
make fine digital prints. Prerequisites: ART251 and
ART252 and permission of the instructor.
