Teacher candidacy is a set of procedures and standards for completing teacher education programs at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Through this policy, Edinboro University ensures that its graduates meet the quality standards that are advocated at national and state levels for the preparation of teachers. Applications can be obtained in any NCATE Unit Chairperson's office, the Office of Student Teaching and Student Assistance, 152 Miller, or the Dean of Education's Office, 330 Butterfield Hall.

Upper level education courses cannot be scheduled until candidacy is approved. 

IF YOU ARE AN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT you should apply for candidacy when you meet the following criteria:

• have completed at least 45 credits (or will complete 45 credits in the semester in which you are applying)
• have a minimum 2.8 QPA
• have passed Praxis I tests (PPST: Reading, PPST: Writing, and PPST: Math)
• have completed English 101 or 102, an English Literature course, and two Math courses at the 100 level or above
• have completed, with a C or better SPED215 (if it is in your curriculum only)
• attend a Career Development Workshop (pre-registration required – contact Career Services at 732-2781)
• have at least 18 credit hours within your major (Secondary Education only)
• have completed, with a C or better, ELED180 or SPED295 (if it is in your curriculum only)
• have completed, with a C or better, HPE133 or HPE134 (HPE majors only)
• have completed, with a C or better, either HPE220, HPE225, HPE230, or HPE235 (HPE majors only)

A QPA of 2.8 must be maintained to remain in candidacy.

You should submit your application by 4:00 p.m. on the following dates:

• Fall semester: by October 1 (to be eligible for spring scheduling)
• Spring semester: by March 1 (to be eligible for summer & fall scheduling)
• Summer sessions: by July 1 (to be eligible for fall scheduling)

Applications are to be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Education, 330 Butterfield Hall. All applications must be complete or they will not be accepted.  For special circumstances see your advisor.

Applications must include a copy of your Praxis I scores (please include this even if you had scores reported to Edinboro University of PA), and be signed by you and your advisor (Faculty Support Document located on the back of the application.)

IF YOU ALREADY POSSESS A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE and are pursuing a first teacher certification, you must meet the following standards:

• have at least a 3.0 QPA at the undergraduate level OR have an overall QPA of 3.0 at the post-baccalaureate level with a minimum of nine credits
• have passed Praxis I tests (PPST: Reading, PPST: Writing, and PPST: Math)
• have completed English 101 or 102, an English Literature course, and two Math courses at the 100 level or above (if required on program of study)

You should submit your application by 4:00 p.m. on the following dates:

IF YOU ARE ALREADY CERTIFIED IN PENNSYLVANIA and are getting an additional certification, you do not need to apply for candidacy. Along with your coursework, you only need to pass the required Praxis specialty area test in order to be certified in your additional area in Pennsylvania.
